   His death certificate says he was born December 23, 1868, but this is clearly too early, as he doesn't show up in the 1870 census. Assuming the day and month are correct, census records imply he was born Dec 1871 (age 8 or 9 in 1880 census, depending on which record you look at, and stated as Dec 1871 in 1900 census) or Dec 1872 (age 47 in 1920 census), which some compilers prefer since it was after his parents married.

   there is a note after each child saying "with Father", which might be a mis-transcription from the original (now destroyed) forms, which might have said "with Mother", since they are listed with their mother in Clover Creek, Baker, Oregon in the same census (see Mary Jane Westfall's page).

   It is assumed that this is Joseph, in spite of the first name being given as James.
