- ↑ Older sources like Source:Leonard, Ermina Newton. Newton Genealogy, p. 717, call James' wife Rebecca Stow. It is not known why this identification was made. Perhaps James called a Mr. Stow a father-in-law or brother-in-law? (Of course, one would have to study the whole family indepth to rule out this relationship being based on something other than his wife, like a sister marrying a Stow, etc. Note that his brother John did marry a Sarah Stowe.) But the two NEHGR items in 1935 and 1937, cited on his marriage page, seem to prove his wife was Rebecca Blanchard. For some reason, sources seem to want to hold onto the marriage to Rebecca Stow, so call the marriage to Rebecca Blanchard his second marriage, even though Rebecca Stow's parentage is unidentified, her birth is estimated, no children are attributed to her, there is no marriage record and no death record (e.g., here or here. Not knowing the basis for the asserted marriage and having no facts about this alleged Rebecca Stow, it is hard to prove or disprove, but suffice it to say that nothing has been found to justify such an assertion, and seeing sources show such sparse and imprecise information about this alleged Rebecca Stow does not engender confidence in those sources.
