Joined the Royal Irish Constabulary as a Constable in June 1889. There is no record of him having any previous employment. He served in Counties Leitrim, Longford, Antrim, Londonderry and Tyrone; was promoted to Acting Sergeant in 1911, then to Sergeant in 1912. In charge of the Drumlish Barracks in Co. Longford 1917-19 He was friendly with Eamon DeValera who came to his house to play cards.....He was also friendly with another Irish politician named Michael Collins. Collins was murdered after he agreed on a peace treaty with the English. James' friendship with both individuals helped him considerably during all the troubles. It was also told that DeValera was supposed to have warned James to be careful at the time of the Easter Rebellion in 1916. |
