Annie Hales died shortly after giving birth to Thomas Henry in 1875. Henry McLain, her husband, then married Catherine Jane Elloit. Many years later, when Thomas Henry was visiting an aunt he saw a picture on the mantle of a woman he did not know. He asked his aunt who the woman was and she said she was her sister who was his real mother Annie Hales. Up until that time he did not know that Catherine was not his mother.
