Notes

James McCallister (Jr.) was born about 1754, probably on Jackson’s River in Augusta Co., Virginia, or perhaps in Pennsylvania. He died after the1820 census, probably in Cabell Co., [W] Virginia. James married a woman with the first initial "C" (perhaps for Cynthia) about 1780, probably in Botetourt Co., Virginia. It is possible that James married 2nd to Mary Smith on 7 September 1820 in Cabell Co., [W]Virginia. There is no evidence he married Hannah McClain.

Despite many family trees showing that James McCallister Jr. died 1797-1799, he actually was on records in Bath Co. through 1812 and moved to Cabell Co., Virginia, and was still alive for the 1820 census in Cabell Co., [W]Virginia. Part of the problem is that our James McCallister Jr. has been confused with the son of James and Mary McAllister Sr. (A04) in Frederick Co., Virginia. Their son James did die about 1797 in North Carolina.

A. John McCallister b. 1781 in Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. 30 August 1861 in Saline County, Missouri. John married Sarah “Sally” LNU by 1812, probably in Virginia. John married 2nd to Frances “Nancy” Feek on 29 March 1837 in Cooper County, Missouri.

B. Joseph McCallister, b. abt. 1785/1786, Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. after the 1860 census and before1867, in Curry District, Putnam Co., West Virginia. Joseph married Elizabeth Grass on October 3, 1811, in Bath Co., Virginia.

C. Mary McCallister, b. abt. 1785 Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. bef. the 1850 census, in Putnam County, Virginia. She married Benjamin Johnson on October 22, 1814 in Kanawha County, [W]Virginia.

D. Samuel McCallister b. about 1785, in Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. abt. 1827 in Alleghany Co., Virginia. He married Jane LNU about 1808, probably in Bath/Greenbrier County. (Caveat: It is possible that Samuel was the son of Thomas McCallister.)

E. James (III) McCallister, b. 1788/1789, in Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. 13 Feb 1873, at Trace Fork, Mud River, Putnam Co., West Virginia. James married Rebecca <Smith> about 1812, probably in Bath Co., Virginia.

F. Nancy McCallister, b. aft 1790, in Botetourt Co., Virginia, d. 1865 in Putnam County, West Virginia. Nancy married Martin Buzzard on 7 Sept 1810, in Bath Co., Virginia. Her father James consented to her marriage.

G. Hannah McCallister b. 9 Apr 1791/1793, probably in Bath Co., Virginia, d. 9 May 1867, in Newton, Jasper Co., Iowa. Hannah married Thomas Wyatt on 12 Sep 1811in Gallia Co., Ohio.

H. William J. McCallister b. 1790-1800, probably in Bath Co., Virginia, d. late 1849 or early 1850 in probably in Pike Co., Kentucky. He married Louisa LNU, probably in [W]Virginia or Kentucky.

I. Daughter McCallister b. abt. 1795-1800, probably in Bath Co., Virginia.

J. Richard McCallister, b. 1797-1801, probably in Bath Co., Virginia, d. June 5, 1859, in Cabell Co West Virginia. Richard married Sarah Nicholas on January 11, 1821, Kanawha Co., [W] Virginia.

K. Elizabeth McCallister b. 1800-1810 Bath Co., Virginia, probably died before the 1850 census in Mason Co., [W]Virginia. Elizabeth “Betsy” McAllister married William Jones on 1 September 1825 in Mason Co., [W]Virginia.

L. Virginia <Adaline> "Jane" McCallister b. abt. 1804/1805 in Bath Co., Virginia, d. 29 Apr 1880 in Buffalo District, Putnam, West Virginia. Virginia married Samuel McCoy about 1820, probably in the Mason Co., [W]Virginia area.

M. Reuben McCallister b. abt. 1809 in Bath Co., Virginia, d. between 1853 and 1859 in Scioto Co., Ohio. He married Nancy Snodgrass on 24 June 1833 in Kanawha Co., [W]Virginia.
