4. James Marrs (John ) was born in 1762 in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He died on 1 Nov 1814 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. He was buried in Evansville Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana.

James Marrs was born about 1755 in Rockbridge County, Virginia and he isthought to have been the son of Pulsohola Folsom Marrs, the daughter ofAdam Folsom and a Choctaw woman whose name is unknown. The father ofJames Marrs is thought to be John Marrs. James Marrs was a Sgt. in the7th Virginia Continental Line during the Revolutionary War, and fought inthe Battle of Cowpens. He was a PVT. in the Militia at CumberlandSettlement, Tennessee under the command of Capt. John Shannon. In1809 he had moved his family to Posey County, Indiana. By 1810, Annaand James had moved to "Marrs Station" near Evansville, Indiana. In 1811James signed a petition to Congress from the Indian Territory. James wasthe first Judge in Warrick County, Indiana in 1813-1814. He died of"Milk-sickness" on Nov.1,1814. Milk sickness is poisonous after drinkingmilk produced by a cow who has eaten a plant known as white snake root.He is buried at the old Evansville Cemetery in Vanderburgh County,Indiana.

Proof of marriage for James Marrs and Anna Shannon is found in EarlyAdventures on the Western Waters by Kegley, Vol. II p. 308, 6thparagraph. It states " A letter, dated April 23, 1782, and filed with theMontgomery County marriage bonds, records that James Mears and AnnaShannon, daughter of Samuel Shannon, planned to be married on thefollowing day. William Mears was to sign the bond for his brother James.All parties agreed to the wedding, but they did not wish to be married byRichard Whitt. William Christian, writer of this letter, proposed toaccompany Mr. Craighead (perhaps Alexander, a Presbyterian minister) toSamuel Pepper's where the wedding party was to be on the followingmorning. The marriage bond was dated April 22, 1782." The sameinformation is also found in the same book on page 177 Marriage Bonds,1777-1778. James Marrs is also listed in the DAR Patriot Index CentennialEdition, Part II on page 1898, DAR records say that James Marrs was born1762/65. I question this as his wife, Anna Shannon was born in 1753.

Source: The book, Marriages in the New River Valley (Therese Fisher, 191, p.150) spells James' name as "Mairs" quoting marr. record toAnna Shannon and lists him as "brother of William Mairs". James married Anna A. Shannon daughter of Samuel Shannon and Jean Reid on 22 Apr 1782 in Fincastle, Montgomery County, Virginia. Anna was born on 12 Mar 1763 in Montgomery County, Virginia. She died on 14 May 1822 in Posey County, Indiana. She was buried in Old Union Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana.

Anna Shannon was born Mar.12,1753 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Shemoved with her parents to the Cumberland Settlement at what is today, Nashville, Tennessee. On Apr.22,1782 in Montgomery County, Virginia Anna marriedJames Marrs. In 1822 Anna was living in Indiana with her son, William BlaineMarrs. Anna died May 14,1822 in Posey County, Indiana. She is buried at OldUnion Cemetery.

James and Anna had the following children:
