Dear Reed: Now you've brought up a problem I've wondered about and had a theory on! James Ledgerwood, of Sullivan Co. was a Rev. War veteran and married Elizabeth McCoun, or McGowan or whatever variant. He was a son of William Ledgerwood of Augusta, Botetourt Va and Fayette KY. Now I found his marriage record to Elizabeth McGowan on 29 Dec 1781 in a Kentucky marriage record database. Her parents, James McCown, Jr. and Margaret Walker, lived next door to William Ledgerwood in Botetourt Co. and there are deeds there, showing William Ledgerwood and James McCown selling their land on the same day to the same man -- ostensibly to go to Kentucky, I figured.

I ALSO, noticed that marriage record to Jenny McFadden, and I always thought since he was the only James Ledgerwood I ever saw in that area of Kentucky, that Elizabeth McCown died and he remarried to Jenny McFadden. Yet, a book on Revolutionary Soldiers of Indiana, only lists Elizabeth McCown.

I guess this is a long answer to say, that I think you're on the right track, and I think that you're probably a descendant of William Ledgerwood, Jr. and his wife Rebecca Moody. William Jr. was a son of William Sr. and his wife, Agnes, who some researchers claim was Agnes Mitchell, but I have never seen any proof of her maiden name. Rebecca Moody was the daughter of James Moody, and a Mrs. Wilson, who was a widow. James Moody was a son of Robert Moody and Isabella. The Moody info all comes from "Chronicles of the Scotch_Irish settlement in Virginia." There was a law case involving Fraziers vs. Ledgerwoods, with a long explanation of these relationships.

I think you're correct here, even more now. James son of William Jr. lived in Sullivan Co. and there's a nice write-up on him in the Indiana Rev. Soldiers book. I can give you the list of children from that write-up; some of whom must have been Jenny McFadden's. William b. 12-29-1786; Samuel d. 1875; Joseph m. 1810 Nancy Gill; Margaret m. 1810 James Lisman; Nancy; John Wesley d. young; Elizabeth; Sarah b. 1804 (first white ch. b. in Sullivan Co. IN)m. Wm. Cartwright; Melinda.

I hope that helps. I did not write down the full citation on the copy I made of the entry for James Ledgerwood, as he's not my direct line. But it's not hard to find in libraries, Soldiers of the Am. Rev. buried in Indiana, I think is the full title, and his bio is on p. 63. It says he m. in botetourt Co. va; and that he sold his liv. Botetourt Co. then went to Lincoln Co. Ky; and to Ind. in early 1800s, and was 1st settler of Sullivan Co. where he had Ledgerwood Fort near Carlisle. Info provided by Mrs. Glenn E. Wheeler of Vincennes, Indiana. Hope this helps.
