Dear Dick: This is a little confusing. There was James Ledgerwood, son of William Jr. and Rebecca Moody, who fought in the Rev. and was listed as dead, but papers prove that he was captured and came back later. HE went to Kentucky and then to Indiana. There is another James, whom many PRESUME (but can't prove) who also fought in the Rev. and he died (and stayed dead!) in one of the big battles, I think it was in PA -- I have the reference around here somewhere....Those are the only two I ever heard of that early. The second James many think was the son of William Sr. and Agnes <Mitchell>. I put Mitchell in brackets because I've seen no proof that that was her name, but so many people are using it, it bears looking into.

I found in "Augusta County, Virginia, Baptismal Records 1740 - 1749 by Rev. Jim Craig D. D." Maxwell, 1975, Ohio Genealogical Center. James Legerwood, son of William Baptised Dec 11, 1740. This is probably the son of William Sr.

There WAS another James who m. Bethiah Pierce in Green Co. TN and no one seems to be able to place him with any confidence. He m. in 1807, so might have been born as late as 1790. Since he's in Green Co. and most of the Green Co. Ledgerwoods seem to be sons of John Ledgerwood I, of Botetourt Co. a lot of people place that James tentatively there. I think Bev on this forum might be tracing the James and Bethiah Pierce and might know more about where he went. Hope this helps.

Post Reply | Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message James Ledgerwood b. abt. 1735 was the 2nd son of William and Agnes Mitchell Ledgerwood who came to Augusta County, VA in 1738. He disappears from records about 1760, when his brother William moved to Kentucky.

A paper done in Indiana about James Hamrick, son of William (Kentucky) said James went to Chester County, SC. Can anyone verify this?

Thanks

Dick
