From: "Gail Blankenau" | Block address To: "Marianne Hall-Little" Subject:RE: Ledgerwood Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 12:10:52 -0800 Dear Marianne: Thanks for writing back to me regarding Ledgerwoods. My genealogy heart gave a little leap when you said you got John's wife's name off the marriage license. Great news. What marriage license? In Botetourt? Could I get a copy or a cite? Regarding John Sr.'s death as in 1806; yes, I can shed a little more light on that too. Another researcher said there's a note in the Montgomery Co. VA probate records that John Ledgerwood's will was proven in 1806; but the will can't be found! Yikes! Wouldn't you know it? Children's names: We can prove Isabel who m. Samuel Kerr, because her father is listed on the marriage record. I feel we can prove David, who mentions in either a will or deed "land he had from his father John of Botetourt County" I can't find my actual cite for this, but it's in this ream of papers I have! I feel for Margaret we have a strong case, as the land she left to her brother was the same land patented to John Ledgerwood in Roanoke Co. Others who can't be proven but I'm pretty sure they belong: 4) John (we know John Sr had a John because there were 2 John on the tax list and John Sr. paid tax for the other one); I think it's the John who m. Eleanor Newman in TN. 5) William b. abt 1764, prob. the one in Montgomery Co. VA; conveyed land to Halls originally patented to John Ledgerwood; wife's name was Sarah (could it have been Sarah Kindle?). 6) Nathaniel -- I have this because so many other researchers have it, but no proof. 7) Samuel -- maybe the one who m. Sally Pierce in TN 8) Jacob -- from other researchers 9) George -- from other researchers 10) Joseph -- """" 11) Mary -- the one who witnessed Isabella's marriage. 12) Margaret -- may be the one with the will 27 Sep 1834 names brothers William, David & sister Isabella. (Problem is she names Isabella Ledgerwood, not Isabella Kerr -- so I'm not sure). 13) Rebecca -- will Sep 1834 Roanoke Co. names sisters Margaret, Mary& brother William. 14) EXTREMELY tentative Annie Ledgerwood who m. Isaac Epling. I want to check the Greene Co. TN Deeds for Ledgerwoods, these all seem to be sons of John Sr., I'm hoping deeds will help. Other tidbits:

!RESEARCH:<<John Ledgerwood>>Research:The only children actually proven to be those of John are David, William, Margaret, Mary and Rebecca. This proof is in the deed of land which David made to Margaret, and the wills of Margaret, Mary and Rebecca naming the others. Is this the William Ledgerwood, that had sons, John b 1739 in Scotland, William, Jr.died 1794, Fayette Co., Virginia married Rebecca Moody., and James. John married unknown and fathered 12 children, Samuel b Virginia died Knox Co., TN married Sarah Pearce march 5, 1808 Green Co., Tn. Joseph, John, William, George, James, David, Bacob, Nathaniel, Mary, Rebecca and Margaret b. March 26, 1774 Virginia and died Jan. 21, 1853 in California, MO. Margaret married Michael Berger/Burger. This is the same family. John, I have never been sure about. He would have been born in this country, probably VA as his Parents were living here as early as 1738. He could have been here earlier, as many families were, then had to pay for the land they were using, when William Beverley received a grant for the land they were occuping. William and James were both at Battle of Blue Lick (aka Blue Lick Defeat), probably the last battle of the Revolutionary War. One or both could have been at the Battle of Point Pleasant. There were also three daughters, Martha m. James Patterson, Jane m. John Moffett (Sr.) (my ancestor) and Elenor. I would be interested in learning more about John. - Source - Roberta Leigh (Ledgerwood) Dennis - e-mail - robidennis@@hotmail.com Change Date: 27 Mar 2002 at 00:00:00

http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaboteto/bote-698.htm June 21, 1998 from Gblankenau@@email.msn.com (Gail Blankenau ) LEDGERWOOD, LEDGEWOOD, PATTERSON - I'm looking for information on John LEDGERWOOD/ LEDGEWOOD who is listed in the Botetourt Co. 1771-1784 tax list. An old Virginia Genealogist query lists these children for John and an unknown wife: David, John, William, Nathaniel, Samuel, Jacob, James, Joseph, George, Mary, Rebecca & Margaret, with no sources listed. Possible link (brother) to Martha LEDGERWOOD who m. Samuel PATTERSON and went to Botetourt Co. as well? Many LEDGERWOODs in the old Augusta Co. records but haven't found John yet. Thank you. Gail Blankenau

http://www.geneasearch.com/females/females.cgi?Allen Interesting record in Botetourt County, Virginia records:

Name: Annie Ledgerwood Born: 178? Birth Place: Botetourt or Montgomery Co, Va. Spouse: Isaac Epling Yr Married: 1803 Lived In: Virginia Comments: First_Known_Census: 1850

Children: Paul, Henley, Allen, Isaac, Elizabeth, Margaret, Nancy, William, Philip

Died in 1854 so the 1850 was the only one she was named in. Only clue to who her parents might have been was a mention in Botetourt Co., Va. court records, 1784, that said, "John Ledgerwood for keeping Lucy Kerr unlawfully and having a child by her." That's all it said. In 1801 Lucy Kerr became the second wife of Isaac Epling's father in Montgomery Co. and sometime between then and about 1803 Isaac Epling married Annie Ledgerwood. John and Lucy's illegitimate child? No proof has yet been found. Sure need some help.

Post Reply | Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message Dear Cindy,

I have looked for Wm Hall and Nancy Hall's land for years. Do you know where the farm was? John Ledgerwood apparently left a will in Montgomery Co. Va in 1806 but it was never proved. From other records It appears he gave his land to son David and maybe ?daughter or wife Margaret. Three elderly women are found to be living with Wm Nancy Hall in 1840 censes. I think these women are Margaret, Rebecca, and Mary. Were these women sisters or daughters of John Ledgerwood? John Ledgerwood's land was deeded to Wm Hall in one of the older womens's will. Can you tie this all together for me. I have most of the other lines of John's children that left Virginia except David. Deed to land David sold Margaret says he went to Sevier Co. Tenn. My line is John's son Samuel (although I can not tie this with records) Samuel died in 1817 in Knox Co. Tenn. His widow Sarah married Issac Hembree in Knox Co. Tenn. and came to Dubois Co. In, with Samuel's four children, James, Bethia, Nancy, and Nathaniel. I have a 94 year old great aunt who is the GRANDDAUGHTER of Nathaniel, who is still living and still lives alone. Issac and Sarah Hembree traveled from Tenn with Samuel Ledgerwood's brothers, James and Nathaniel. Is there any questions you have that I can try to answer? I am really trying to straighten out the John Ledgerwood family that stayed in Virginia. Any help you can give me I will certainly appreciate.

We have a discussion group going and would love to have you join us. Including you - it would be 4 and we have the possibility of 2 or 3 more researchers joining us.

I went to the Montgomery Co. CH today and found a few things...but still nothing that really ties all this info together.

I believe that John Ledgerwood (Sr.) was a son born to William and Agness (Mitchell) Ledgerwood after their arrival in Orange Co., VA (which became Augusta Co.). Their arrival was in 1739 and they proved their oath of importation in Orange Co. Their children are also listed - but no John...but do firmly believe that John was b. about 1741 or 1742 - and depending on Agness' age, as late as 1745.

Some of the researchers believe it is possible that John could be a first cousin to Wm. Jr., who married Rebeckah Moody and removed to KY. Of course that is possible, but have found no other Ledgerwood's in the VA area or Philadelphia area - that is where the Ledgerwood's came into port with 2 other Augusta families - the Mitchell's and Moffet's.

I will be glad to send you copies of the emails that we have been sending back and forth to each other.

Cindy
