At a Court of Quarter Session Continued & held for the County of Monroe at the Court House on Wednesday the 22d day of August 1832 & in the 57th year of the Commonwealth State of Virginia} S.S. Monroe County } On the 22d day of August 1832 personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Monroe aforesaid James Jones resident in said County & State aged 71 years who being first duly sworn agreeably to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benifit of the provision made by an act of Congress passed 7th June 1832 That he enlisted in the Army of the United States on the 16th of August 1777 with Capt. Elias Edmons [sic: Elias Edmonds VAS2004] and served in the 2nd . Virginia State Regiment of Artillery which was commanded by Col Thomas Marshall [VAS494]; that he enlisted for three years, and at the time he entered the service he was a resident of Fauquire [sic: Fauquier] County Va. that he served his full period of enlistment and left the service in August 1780; that he got his discharge which was sent to the City of Richmond many years ago, in order to obtain his land; he has produced a certified copy to the Court for the purpose of accompanying this declaration signed by I W. Pleasants Clk of the Executive department Va. bearing date July 27th 1832 He was not in any battle his service was principally in Virginia & North Carolina. He was in Greenville N. C. and at Hillsborough at the time of Gates’ Defeat [defeat of Gen. Horatio Gates at the Battle of Camden SC, 16 Aug 1780]. That if the Copy of his discharge herewith presented by not sufficient he can prove his service by Chief Justice Marshall [John Marshall S5731]. He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state whatever Sworn to & subscribed the day & year above written. [The following report is by District Attorney Washington G. Singleton, who investigated hundreds of pension applicants from present West Virginia. For details see my appendix to the pension application of David W. Sleeth S6111. Singleton expressed no conclusion in Jones’s case.]
James Jones. – (3 yrs. Capt. Edmunds Col. Marshall.) I the undersigned James Jones make the following redeclaration of my services as a soldier in the war of the Revolution to Wit. I was born November 16, 1760 – am a native of Prince William County. lived in Fauquier County during the war. moved to Monroe county in 1782. on the sixteenth day of August 1777 I was enlisted in Fauquier county by Capt Elias Edmunds for three years. our company rendesvouzed at the Court House. marched to Yorktown Virginia. there joined the Second Regt. of Artilery under command of Col. Thomas Marshall. – we remained at York town, Portsmouth & Hampton for two years & six months. during our stay at the places above named Elias Edmunds was promoted to a Major and Capt Samuel Blackwell [VAS2173] succeeded him – after leaving the places above mentioned our Regt. marched to Hillsborough N.C. After Blufords defeat [sic: defeat of Col. Abraham Buford at the Battle of Waxhaws SC, 29 May 1780] we retreated towards virginia. met Genl. Gates Troops then under command of DeCalb [sic: Baron De Kalb]. – we returned with them to Hillsborough and from there we went to Chaltons old Iron works. – at the latter place, a part of the army includeing my self was sent back to Hillsborough to take care of that post – after our tour expired at Hillsborough we marched to Richmond to receive our pay. we were discharged at Richmond after being upwards of 3 yrs. in actual service. – I sent on with my original Declaration a certified copy of my discharge the original being in Richmond. – I sent it there for the purpose of getting the land to which I am entitled. [The following are from bounty-land records in the Library of Virginia.] This is to Certify that James Jones served three years in the Regiment of State Artillery as a Bumbadier [sic: bombardier], the time of his engagement, & conducted himself as a good Soldier. Given under my hand this 4 Oct’r. 1791 Elias Edmonds, late Lieut. Col. S. Artillery
August the 19th Day 1790 Sir/ I cannot come down to the Springs agrrable to my appointment with you I am Disapointed in geting grain thrash’d and it is a great Distance to goe without any thing to market. I hope it wont make any odds with from proceeding in geting that Land Warrant for me if you Can get it for me if you please you may fold it in a letter and Dirrect it to Mr William Lewis at the sweet springs then I Can get it very handy and I will take it as a particular favour of you beside paying you for your trouble. from your &C Capt’n Henry Vowls [probably Henry Vowles R18700] NB Please to Draw a order in my name to the Office Please to give my Compliments to Mr William Ballard
NOTE: On 5 Sep 1849 Mary Jones, 85, applied for a pension stating that she married James Jones on 27 Oct 1781, and he died 16 Mar 1849. On 29 Sep 1849 she stated that the marriage occurred in Fauquier County, and she submitted part of a family record written by her late husband and taken from her Bible.

MARRIAGES James Jones & and Mary Jones was Married October the 27 day in the year 1781 Archibald Campbell and Susannah Campbell was Married October 29th Day 1817 John Jones & Jean Jones was Maried December the 10th 1822 BIRTHS James Jones the son of Peter and Elizabeth Jones was born in the year of our Lord Nov’r. the 16 day 1760 Mary Leach the wife of James Jones and the Daughter of Wm. and Susanna Leach was born August the 10th day in the year of our Lord 1768 William Jones the Son of James and Mary Jones was Born December the 6 day in the year of our Lord 1782 Samuel Jones Son of James and Mary Jones was born March 21 day 1784 DEATHS Betsey Jones Daughter of James and Mary Jones Deceased January 3rd night 1832.
