1930 US Census (VA, Richmond, ED 116-82, sheet 3B), they were living at 1624 N. 28th Street, James Johnson was 31, negro, married at the age of 24, owned his home which was valued at $2,000, was b. VA, both parents b. VA, could read and write, worked as a railroad porter on passenger trains. Mabel was 30, also b. VA, both parents b. VA, Marian 7, Edith 5, Weldon 3. Also living with there were James’ brother, John Johnson, 32, b. VA, John’s wife Polly, 30, b. VA (both parents b. VA), and John’s daughter Mary, 5, b. VA. Per Marian Johnson Sipes, her uncle John only lived with them for about six months. He was down on his luck and lived with them until they were able to buy their own house in the same area as aunt Lucy. Marian said that she, Edith and Mary all had to sleep in the same bed and Mary “was a bitch.” She was spoiled and would always kick them during the night if they inadvertantly touched her, which was bound to happen with three children sleeping in the same bed.

VA, completed 7th grade, didn’t work outside the home. Their two daughters, both b. VA: Marion 16, and Edith 15, both attended school.
