  • Page 487.--20th January, 1767. John Colley (Cawley), aged 20 years, deposes, that being in the presence and company of James Hughs, deceased, during the time of his last sickness in the dwelling house of the said James, he heard him say that should will and bequeath by his last testament all his substance that he was possessed of to his wife Euphemia during her natural life, except a house and lot to his daughter Euphemia, as also the wearing apparel of his first wife, mother of Margt. Kennedy, which he should give and bequeath to the said Margaret, together with her mother's riding saddle, and that this conversation was had with the said decedant James about two days before his _____, which happened on Thursday morning, the 18th inst, and further sayeth not. Randolph Lockhart, aged 30 years, deposes to same effect. Proved, 20th January, 1767. Administration granted widow Euphemia and Sampson Mathews. (Note: this and the record below, prove that James Hughes had a prior marriage and a step-daughter Margaret that married a Kennedy).

David Stewart and Samuel Cowden and 15 acres of wood land belonging to the same and bounded by Sampson Mathews, Archer Mathews, James Hartgrove, Euphram Hughes, widow; being the same whereon Randal Lockhart and John Readpath now lives; also 1/2 acre lot lying above Daniel Kidd's and joining Water Street and divided by one street from a lot belonging to Doctor John Mathews, and 30 acres of woodland thereto belonging; also 1/2 acre lot in Staunton, formerly property of Joseph Bell bounded by Robert Reed and Doctor William Fleming's lots.   • Page 1.--25th August, 1770. William Wilson and Mary ( ), of Albemarle and John Hunter, Sr., and Frances, of Augusta, to Francis Hart, grove of Staunton, £40. In Staunton, part of lot No, 14, 5 poles north and south and 4 poles east and west, only excluding a house on northwest corner wherein Edward Long lived, of 18 by 22 feet in length and breadth. Lot faces James Hustons front on south and James Huse on west, containing 20 square perches, only reserving said house; also 2-1/2 acres wood land on south end of lot of 30 acres between (betwixt) Col. William Preston's land and Joseph Gamble's wood land, about 1/2 mile northwest of Staunton bounded according to courses of Staunton, lot No. 10. Delivered: Francis Harterove, 9th September, 1773.
  • Vol. 2 - MARCH, 1771 (B). - Leister's Administrator vs. Hughes's Administrator.--Chancery. Bill filed 1770. Orator, Samuel Cawdon: Shows that in year 175_ James Leister, of Staunton, trader, deceased, bought lot No. __, in Staunton, from James Hughes, ____ holder of Staunton, deceased, for £25. James Leister died intestate before deed made; administration was granted to David Stewart (now deceased), Walter Cawdon and orator. Administration applied to Hughes for a conveyance to them personally to secure to them a debt due by Leister to them, and they paid all the purchase money but £8. Then James Hughes died intestate; Widow Euphemia qualified executrix. James left heirs, Jane and Mary Hughes, his daughters. In February, 1757, David Stewart also departed this life. Administration was granted Lewis and Mathews, who relinquished to orator all David's claim to the lot. He now demands a conveyance from Hughes's representatives.
  • Page 87.--9th September, 1773. Francis Hardgrove and Sarah, of Surry County, North Carolina, to John David Griner, part of lot 14 in Staunton, house wherein Edward Long lived, faces James Huston and James Hughes.
  • Page 437.--15th November, 1774. Daniel Kidd and John Graham to Theobald, alias Devault, Bosang. James Hughes seised of ot 7 in Staunton and 30 acres of woodland purchased by James from Robert McClenachan and bargained to sell part of each to James Leister, deceased, trader. Leister died before deed made. and James agreed with Leister's administrators and surviving partners to convey to them in consideration of their paying him the remainder of the purchase money; James died before conveyance; through several transfers and suit in chancery, property was conveyed in trust to Daniel Kidd and John Graham to secure them as securities for Samuel Cowdon, by decree in chancery foreclosing the equity of redemption. Delivered: John Bosang, February, 1776.
