DEEDS, LANCASTER COUNTY, VA

1. 16 June 1758. John Hunton and Frances his wife to James Hill, for £50 and 3 barrels of corn. Witnessed by John Fendla, Thomas Currell, Robert Horton and Robert Hill. (DB 16:22)

This deed conveys two parcels:

(a) 50 acres adj. Robert Hill, Gabriel Thatcher, dec'd and on the eastern branch of the Currotoman River. This tract purchased by Hunton from James Kirk [on 12 MAY] 1757 (see DB 15:292).

(b) A small messuge tenement with 23 acres that "lyes near the other parcel. This tract purchased from Ephraim Hubbard (deed not of record.) [I have a note in my hand with a different pen by this last comment that says "73 acres.")

2. 24 FEB 1762. Hugh Ker, merchant of Lancaster, administrator of Robert Hill with the will annexed, to James Hill of Lancaster. The [50 acres] land which Robert Hill purchased of William Codrich & Joannah his wife on 19 AUG 1857 [see DB 15:299]. Bounded on the easter branch of the Currotoman River, lands of Charles Carter, Esq., William Thatcher son of Gabriel Thatcher, dec'd, and said James Hill. WItnessed by Thomas Shearman, Abraham White. 3. 21 DEC 1769. James Hill, planter and Elizabeth his wife, to Mingo Harvey, merchant, all of Lancaster. 100 acres "whereon I now live" bound by the lands of Mingo Harvey lately purchased of William Thatcher, Charles Carter Esq. and East Branch of the Currotoman River. Witnessed by Kendall Lee, Athony McLukar(?) and James McMurd(?). (DB 18:158)

4. 21 DEC 1769. Rawleigh Downman and Frances his wife, Gentleman of Lancaster, to James Hill, planter of Lancaster. 200 acres being "land devised to said Rawleigh Downman by the will of his father Rawliegh Downman, Gent., and bounded per indenture of lease and release between John Taylor, Gent. dec'd and said Rawleigh Downman's father dated 10 and 11 JAN 1715. THIS IS THE 200 ACRES WHICH JAMES HILL DIED POSSESSED OF IN 1773, TAX TO HIS WIDOW FROM 1782-1787, AND TO HIS SON BRITAIN HILL IN 1788 UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1796. THEREFORE, THIS CANNOT BE LAND INHERITED FROM JAMES HILL II, AND THEREFORE THE LAND OF JAMES HILL II IS THE SAME 200 ACRES TAXED TO JOHN HILL'S ESTATE (50 ACRES) AND JOHN HILL JR. (150 ACRES), IN 1782. ____________________

________________________ Per Court Order of June 1782, the Estate of James Hill, dec'd is indebted to to James Hill, orphan of Robert Hill, the sum of £7.19.10 and 1/2 penny. Elias Edmonds and John Yerby, commissioners. Recorded 20 FEB 1783. (Will Book 20, p. 253r).

Chancery Suit, referenced in Order Book 19, p. 73, 19 OCT 1789. Milly Hill daughter of James Hill, upon her motion it is ordered that Elias Edmonds, John Degge and James Carter divide the estate and possess Milly Hill with her part. This was objected to by Britain Hill and Elizabeth Hill, and no division was made.

Exact date of his death is given by the answer of his widow, Elizabeth Hill, in the 1794 chancery to force her to distribute his estate to her two youngest (and married) daughters Milly Dunaway and Betty Lawry (suit #1796-011).

Her personal estate was divided between her son Britain Hill and daughters Milly Dunaway and Elizabeth Lawry. Daughter Frances (Thomas) Pitman had already received her portion. This was per a court order dated 17 OCT 1796, date made not given, recorded 20 FEB 1797 (WB 28:56-67).
