Birth? Abt 1722
Marriage to Mary _____
Death[1] 1789 Lancaster Co., VA

21 SEP 1789. Lancaster Court Order Book 19, p. 69. Mary Hill, widow of John Hill, deceased, granted administration on his estate. Court estate to be appraised by James Carter, Peter Beane, Jeduthan James and James Hill, any three of them.

19 OCT 1789. Lancaster County Will Book 22, p. 114 (227). Inventory returned by appraisers James Carter, Jeduthan James, and James Hill. Included one slave named Jinny, valued at £10.

He was taxed for 50 acres of land from 1782 until his death in 1789. _____________________________

PROBLEM: The law of primogeniture was repealed in Virginia in 1785. If John Hill died in 1789, his land would have been divided between all of his children. This 200 acres seems, however, to have gone solely to John Hill, Jr. There would have been a deed for this, which has not been found.

"In Virginia (VA) the entail was abolished in 1776; however, primogeniture was not eliminated in VA until 1785.  The VA law, unlike the NC law of 1784, provided for equal sharing of real property among all the heirs - both male and female.  [See C. Ray Keim, Primogeniture and Entail in Colonial Virginia, William and Mary Quarterly, Volume XXV, No. 4 (October 1968), Pages 550-551]" From http:/sc_tories.tripod.comlaw_of_primogeniture_in_the_south.htm ________________________________
