James Gorringe was born 15 Oct 1843 in Horne, Surrey, the third son of George Gorringe, a miller, and Elizabeth Longley. James had six brothers, all but one of whom lived until adulthood and worked as coal porters, grooms, gardeners and agricultural labourers. A brother, Henry, died at the age of ten and two sisters, Alice and Elizabeth Jane, married a bricklayer foreman and general labourer respectively.
James was counted twice on the 1851 census, once with his parents and siblings at "Hedge Court" in Horne, and again in Church Lane in a house next to the church with his grandparents Thomas and Sarah Longley and aunts Sarah and Emma Longley. At the time Thomas Longley was working as a schoolmaster and Parish Clerk.
In 1861 17 year-old James was living with the family of Michael Hall, a draper and grocer in Worth, Sussex (less than 10 miles from Horne). He is listed as a servant and working as a porter, likely for Mr Hall's grocery and drapery businesses. Also living in the same house was 14 year-old house servant Jane Huggett, who married James' younger brother Edgar in 1869. Jane may have also been a cousin by marriage, as James' aunt Emma Longley married a James Huggett, although the connection between Jane and James Huggett hasn't been determined yet. Also living in the Worth / Turner's Hill area was Jane Stringer, daughter of a local agricultural labourer. Jane and James must have known each other when they were both living in Worth. It is not yet known whether they moved to London together or at different times, but in June 1865 they were both living at 11 Talbot Mews, Paddington and 18 year-old Jane married 22 year-old James at St. Stephen's Church, Paddington, with James' older brother William and Esther Cogdell as witnesses.
Two years later their first son, James, was born, followed by daughters Phillis Emily in 1868 and Catherine Mary in 1870. In the 1871 census the family of five were sharing a house with visitor Penelope Stringer (Jane's sister), another family with three children, and a young married couple. They were living at 42 Brindley Street in Paddington (see a 1960's painting of the street here), which in Booth's 1898 map was classified as "mixed: some comfortable, others poor". Without knowing how large the house was it's difficult to know how cramped the house was, but it seems likely the Gorringe family occupied a small number of rooms on one floor of the building. James worked as a coal porter.
James and Jane's next son, Robert Victor, was born in 1876, and their sixth and final child George was born 22 Mar 1878 at 85 Clarendon Street, Paddington. James' parents George and Elizabeth Gorringe both died in 1878 in Surrey. Sadly, James' wife Jane died of acute pneumonia on 31 Jan 1880 aged just 32. James was now a widower at the age of 37 with five young children to feed. In the 1881 census he was still living at 85 Clarendon Street, with children Emily, Kate, Annie, Robert and George (eldest son James would have been 13, and as he isn't there it seems reasonable to presume that he had died). Living two streets over was charwoman Sarah Kelley, his brother-in-law's unmarried sister (Emily Stringer, Jane's sister, married Walter Kelley, Sarah's brother, in 1876).
James married Sarah Kelley at the Register Office on 12 Sep 1881, with John and Jessie Bounds as witnesses. James and Sarah's first child, John Albert Gorringe, was born 29 Jul 1882 and baptised at St. Mary Magdalene Church on 5 Oct 1882. He was followed by William Thomas, born 1887 and Ethel May born 1891. Sarah also had a son, Charles Frederick Kelley, in 1874, who adopted by James and eventually took on the Gorringe surname. In the 1891 census James, Sarah, Charles, Robert, George, John and William were living at 3 Enbrook Street, Chelsea, and sharing the house with one other couple. The 1898 Booth poverty map indicates that Enbrook street was "fairly comfortable" where the inhabitants had "good ordinary earnings".
By 1901 James' children Kate and Penelope Ann had married, and son George was living with Penelope and her husband. James was still living at 3 Enbrook Street with Sarah and children Charles, Robert, John, William, and Ethel. He was working as a coal porter, as he had done most of his life. As they grew, James' children became or married mail sorters, labourers, furnace stokers, railway carmen, warehousemen, porters, and factory hands. James died at 3 Enbrook Street on 11 Jan 1910 at the age of 66 from bronchitis (possibly related to his work as a coal porter). His descendants are currently known to live in England, Canada, and New Zealand.
