George Gorringe was born 22 Mar 1878 at 85 Clarendon Street, Paddington, the sixth (and last) child of coal porter James Gorringe and Jane Stringer. Jane died on 31 Jan 1880 at the age of 32 from acute pneumonia when George was just two years old. In the 1881 census James, now a widower, was still living at 85 Clarendon Street with his five young children.
James married his second wife, charwoman Sarah Ann Kelley, when George was three. Sarah already had a son, Charles Frederick Kelly, when they were married. James and Sarah had two sons and one daughter together. George's two older brothers, three older sisters, two younger half-brothers and one younger half-sister became or married mail sorters, labourers, furnace stokers, railway carmen, warehousemen, porters, and factory hands.
In the 1891 census 13 year-old George was living with his father, stepmother, 2 older brothers and 2 younger half-brothers at 3 Enbrook Street, Chelsea. He worked as an errand boy at the port. In 1901 George was 23 and living at 21 Cobbold Road, Willesden with his sister Penelope and her husband, Henry Hopkins. In 1903 he was witness to his adopted/half-brother Charles Kelly Gorringe's marriage to Emily Field. George's father James died 11 Jan 1910 at the age of 66 from bronchitis.
George must have met his future wife Elizabeth Delowery by 1903, when he was a witness to his future sister-in-law Annie Eliza Delowery's marriage to Henry Joseph Bowers. In fact George was living with Elizabeth's mother Eliza and stepfather Alfred Hannington at 52 Quainton St, Neasden in the 1911 census. Alfred was a boiler maker, and George was a boiler makers assistant, so he probably learned the trade from his future step-father-in-law.
In 1913 George was living at 31 Tidemore Street in Wandsworth with Elizabeth Delowery. George and Elizabeth were married June 29th 1913 at St George's Church in Battersea, London. They had two sons: Alfred Victor George, b. 10 Sep 1913 at 4 Swete Street, West Ham, and Stanley Edward James, whose birth was registered in West Ham but baptised at St. Jude's Church, Kensal Green on 11 Mar 1917. At the time of Stanley's baptism their address was given as 24 Enbrook St, which is where George's adopted/half-brother Charles Kelly Gorringe lived with his wife and children.
George worked as a railway boiler makers assistant from 1901 to his death at the age of 46. He died at 105 Ranelagh Road, West Ham on 26 May 1924 from heart disease and bronchitis.
