    James Lewis French and Eleanor Shanks moved to Ebell, Alabama about 1831 from Tennessee. He was a Methodist Minister and Farmer. They had 11 children, most of whom moved to Narvarro County, Texas between 1850-1870. Children are: Lewis, Elijah, Sarah, Moses, Love Ann, Azele, Lafford, Elenor, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, and Rutha.

    James was the son of Lafford French (b. 1753 in ? New Jersey) of South Carolina. Lafford was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He died Sept. 11, 1831 and was buried in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

    Thomas French, progenitor, was born in 1639, Nether Heyford, England. He was a Quaker who was persecuted for his beliefs. He, his wife and nine children came on H.M.S. Kent and landed at Burlington, N.J. August 1680. He died in 1699.
