From “Short biographical notices of the principal merchants, manufacturers etc of Glasgow in 1783”: William James Davidson, owner of Ruchill, Barony, was son of James Davidson, merchant. Ruchill and it’s owner feature in “Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry”. There is a Davidson mausoleum at the necropolis; James Davidson was involved in the lucrative muslin trade and was a partner of James and John Meikleham. Their warehouse stood on the east side of Glassford Street. After their death Davidson became a successful merchant in his own right and bought the lands of Ruchill, Garrioch and Balgray. He owned Ruchill House but also kept a residence at Wemyss Bay. A portrait of James Davidson of Ruchill (1772 Glasgow-1850 Ruchill) by John Graham Gilbert was lent to the Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by William James Davidson of Ruchill. James married (1) Elizabeth Gardner and (2) Mary Wilsone. .James married Mary Wilsone 29aug1825 Glasgow (Latter Day Saints). Mary may have been born 3feb1789, Glasgow, daughter of Charles Wilsone and Jean Dickson (IGI). Scottish archives have the will of Mary Davidson or Wilsone, d. 19aug1875 at Ferncliff Villa, Wemyss Bay, reg. 1876 Paisley; Mary Davdison nee Wilson died 1875 aged 86 (scotlandspeople). References
