William James Davidson b. 21dec1813, Glasgow, son of James Davidson and Elizabeth Gardner (IGI). William James Davidson married Harriet Sprot 20apr1847 at Cadder, Lanarks (IGI). Wigtown Free Press: William James Davidson, yr. of Ruchill married Judith, youngest daughter of late Sir Alexander Grierson of Lag. Bart. at Lymphoy, Currie, 14jun1844. IGI: William James Davidson married Judith Grierson, daughter of Alexander Sir Grierson at Barony and Currie, Midlothian 14jun1844. Lag is in Dumfriesshire. Scotlandspeople have the will of Sir Alexander Grierson of Lag, reg. 1841. William J. Davidson, b. 1814, and spouse Harriet, b. 1825, were counted at Lanarkshire in 1851 and 1871 and at Midlothian in 1901 (census). In 1881 Wm. J. They had issue, among others - Harriet Mary Agnes Tweedie (RH.1893) Born 1873 at Edinburgh. Married Robert Morgan a merchant in Calcutta. Harriet was born 5sep1873 at Edinburgh (IGI). She was the granddaughter of Judith Grierson From “Short biographical notices of the principal merchants, manufacturers etc of Glasgow in 1783”: William James Davidson, owner of Ruchill, Barony, was son of James Davidson, merchant. Ruchill and it’s owner feature in “Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry”. There is a Davidson mausoleum at the necropolis; James Davidson was involved in the lucrative muslin trade and was a partner of James and John Meikleham. Their warehouse stood on the east side of Glassford Street. After their death Davidson became a successful merchant in his own right and bought the lands of Ruchill, Garrioch and Balgray. He owned Ruchill House but also kept a residence at Wemyss Bay. References
