Acquisition of Land in Bedford Co., Virginia:
- Bedford Co., VA Deeds: Stith to Crawford. 27th Day of March 1770 between Richard Stith for Behalf of the Exrs. of Richard Randolph Gent. of Henrico County Deceased of the one part and James Crawford and Samuel Crawford sons of Wlliam Crawford Dec'd. of the other part. Witnesseth the said Richard Stith for and in consideration of the full sum of __ pounds seven shilling and six pence current money of Virginia in hand paid the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and deliver and conform unto them the said James Crawford and Samuel Crawford their heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or part of land containing two hundred and twelve acres by the same or less on both sides of Hays fork of Goose Creek at the head of situate in Bedford County and Bonded.... being part of a patent granted four thousand acres being part of the land conveyed by ___ of Richard Randolph Gent. Dec'd to the said Richard by a power of attorney dated November the seventh one thousand seven hundred and sixty one and Recorded in the ___ and also in Bedford Court.... in witness whereof the said Richard Stith hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above written. Hoagland, South Bend, Indiana; query letter in file in 1926 from descendant Mrs. Louisa M. Gibbs, same city; query letter in file in 1929 from great great granddaughter Miss Mildred Cadwalader, Washington D.C. states soldier was born 1759 in Virginia, married 10/10/1786 to Sarah Vansandt, Botetourt County, Virginia, who was born 1767 in Virginia, further they moved to Kentucky in 1795 & settled near Hillsboro, Fleming County, 1800, further wife died 11/23/1827, soldier died 5/16/1836, both buried on family farm near Hillsboro, further their son Alexander (great grandfather of querier) was born 3/23/1789 in Botetourt County, Virginia, married 6/26/1810 to Rebecca Alexander (born 1/11/1793), Flemingsburg, Kentucky, further Alexander War of 1812 soldier from Kentucky, moved family in 1827 to Sangamon County (area later Menard County), Illinois, & settled on farm at Indian Creek, further Alexander died 11/30/1851 & Rebecca died 3/13/1865, they having 10 children; query letter in file in 1916 from great granddaughter Jennie V. (Mrs. Richard) Johnson, Madison, Indiana; query letter in file in 1906 from descendant Minnie Vawter Harold, Indianapolis, Maryland, stating Jennie Vawter Johnson, above, daughter of her father's brother; query letter in file in 1902 from descendant Lucy (Mrs. W.A.) ◦James Crawford and Sarah Van Zandt (Vansant) were married in Botetourt County, Virginia. Records at Fincastle, Virginia state her father, Isaiah Vansant gave written permission for his daughter Sarah to marry James C rawford. Marriage bond mentioning Samuel Roberts dated 21 October 1786. James Crawford moved from Virginia to Kentuckyy in 1795 and later settl ed on a farm near Hillsboro, Fleming County about 1800. James Crawford and Sarah VanZandt Crawford are buried on this farm. Their tombstones sh ow James Crawford died May 16, 1836 and Sarah VanZandt Crawford died Nov 25, 1827. The following was taken from the family bible of James Crawford: James Crawford & Sarah Vansant were married Oct 20, 1786. There were fourteen children: 1. Mary Crawford born Sept 1, 1787 2. Margaret Crawford the Dau of Andrew Crawford who was my GGGG Grandfather. Married Elisha Vansandt April 8 1788 in Va. Margaret was B Mar. 8 1866 in Botetourt Co. Va. and Sept 27 1859 in Fleming CO. KY. this Couple had 11 children all of them were in Fleming Co. KY. Margaret Uncle James Crawford B 1758 Botetourt Co. Va. son of John Crawford and Brother to Andrew Crawford. James married the sister of Elisha Vansandt a Sarah Vansandt she was born in Botetourt Co of Va in 1762. James died May 16 1836 in Fleming Co. KY and Sarah Nov. 25 1827 in Fleming Co. Most of this family is buried at Hillsboro Cemetery, Fleming CO. KY. James and Sarah had 13 children Mary 1/9/1787 M. Pension Application of James Crawford S1191 VA Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris.
State of Kentucky } SS. Fleming County } On this day personally appeared in open Court before the justices of the Fleming County Court now sitting James Crawford a resident of the county and state first aforenamed aged 74 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an act of congress passed June 7th 1832. Viz that he entered the service of the United States in Bottatout [sic: Botetourt] County Virginia in the year 1778 or 79 (he thinks in 78) the first day of September. that he served under Capt William Colbert in the regiment commanded by Col Patrick Lockhart immediately after being enlisted he marched to Fort McIntosh [at present Beaver PA] below Fort Pitt below the mouth of Big Beaver the he served the full term of 3 months the period for which he was enlisted and was discharged at Fort McIntosh by Col Lockhart that he was in no engagement during this period that he afterwards entered Service of the United States as a volunteer in the year 1780 in December in the State of Virginia Bottatout County that he marched to South Carolina under Major David Campbell and Capt Alex. Henley [sic: Alexander Handly] that he marched without delay haveing stopt but one day during the march to join Col [Daniel] Morgan’s rifle corps whose regiment he joined three or four days after the battle of the Cowpens [17 Jan 1781] that he was with the army retreating from Cornwallis during the retreat at the ford of Atkins river [sic: probably Trading Ford on Yadkin River, 4-5 Feb 1781] acting as a picket guard under Capt Hanly he was attacked and his Capt and one private taken prisoner the private afterwars escaping and two men of the guard killed and two wounded after crossing Atkins river he marched to Halifax Courthouse in Virginia that he was discharged at that place by Maj Campbell having been in no battle or skirmish other that the aforenamed that he volunteered the last time for 3 months which time he served previous to being discharged that he had written discharges both times has lost them both long since that knows but one person in this County who can prove his service whose certificate is below annexed that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the preasant and that his name is not on the agency of any state Sworn to and subscribed this 1st day of ap’l. in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty three – he was born in Augusta County Virginia he lived there till he removed to Fleming County Kenty. he herewith attaches a $30 Bill which he rec’d. as pay [not found] James Crawford
