James Bescoby was born around 1827 at Evedon in Lincolnshire, son of a cottager called Thomas Bescoby and his wife Ann. James appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Evedon.

By 1851 James was living in the city of Peterborough, working as a footman for a Thomas Mills, who was the Rector of Northborough, and his family, who lived on Priestgate Street. One of the other servants in the household was a Catherine Ward. The 1861 census finds James still working for the by then widowed Elizabeth Mills, with Catherine Ward still working in the same household.

James's employer, Elizabeth Mills, died in 1867. The following year, James married Catherine Ward. They married at Thurlby near Bourne in Lincolnshire on 25th November 1868. Catherine appears to have gone to live there with her sister, possibly after Mrs Mills' death.

After their marriage, James and Catherine settled back in Peterborough and James worked as a gardener. They appear in the 1871 census living on Allens Lane there.

James died on 8th July 1871 at Peterborough. He was said to be 44 years old. Catherine survived him by over 25 years.
