'Jacob Groff, the son of John, and the grandson of Hans Groff, was the ancestor of the Grove family of Washington county, Md. He removed to Sharpsburg from Lancaster county previous to the laying out of the town in 1765, and it is a tradition among his descendants that he engaged in the practice of medicine. He lived in a stone house in one of the side streets in Sharpsburg, which is still standing. He was born June 4, 1737, and died August 15, 1819. His wife, Catharine, was born March 3, 1742, and died September 25, 1823. They were buried in the Reformed graveyard at Sharpsburg. Jacob and Catharine Groff were the parents of nine children: Catharine; Philip; Stephen; Henry; Peter; Jacob; Paul; John; and Elizabeth.'
