Facts and Events
Name Jacob Frederick Fitting
Gender Male
Birth? Abt 1824 Germany
Marriage Bef 1856 to Catharine Foerster
Marriage 1878 New York, New York Co., New Yorkto Catherine Beyer
Death? Mar 1890 probably New York

In the 1850 census for Brooklyn, 9th Ward, King's Co., New York, "Jacob Felting" is 28, laborer, from Germany, living with Adam Mehl, gardener. {p. 63} Adam's son Philip Mehl, who later married Jacob's daughter Anna, is age 2.

 I believe Jacob is the "Jacob Footing" listed in the 1860 US Census in New York City.  This Jacob, age 40 from Germany, was a milkman living with his wife Catharine, age 30 from Brest, and his two sons Christoper and Jacob, ages 4 and 2. {New York, Ward 22, Div. 4, p.24}
  According to family history, Jacob and his brother served in the Civil War. More than 200,000 German immigrants served in the Union Army, including several famous all-German regiments. According to a letter from Helen Voorman Fitting, the brother was lost 'out west' after the war.
  In 1870, he is probably the 'Jacob Feeting' living in New York, age 51, a milkman from Hesse-Darmstadt.  His wife Catharine, from "Beisrn Ger"(Bayern?), is 42, and they have children Cristian 14; Jacob 12; John 8; Annie 3; and George 1 year. Jacob is listed as a male citizen of US.  {New York, 22nd Ward, 16th Dist., p. 55}
 According to email communication from a descendant of Anna Fitting Mehl, Jacob remarried after his wife Catherine Foster passed on.
 This means that he is most probably the Jacob Fitting, age 56 [!] in the 1880 US Census living on West 38th Street in New York City with wife Kate, age 34 from Germany, and (her?) children John Henry Geiler age 12, Maggie [Geilear?] 10, George 8, Lewie 5, Annie [Fitting?] 13; and [by this marriage?] a 3 month old daughter Lizzie Fitting. {ED 395, p. 19}
  NOTE: I have not found Jacob Fitting II or his brothers John and George in the 1880 census.
 Jacob Frederick was "a supervisor on the old horse cars [in NYC], the Eighth Ave Line" and worked up near Central Park.  Jacob's son George described him as "a very distinguished and good looking man -- larger in statue than any of his sons of whom there were four."  It was his impression the family came from Dresden. {letter by Helen Voorman Fitting}
 His death date is based on information from a Geilear researcher. {private email, 22 Jan 2003}
