He was a member of the Sommerfeld Mennonite congregation. He joined the Rudnerweider congregation (more spiritual and less conservative) after it split from the Sommerfeld congregation in 1937. He did not go to Paraguay with his brother and sisters in 1927-28 and was considered by them to be insufficiently committed to the church (somewhat in disgrace). His wife (from a Bergthal Mennonite congregation background) was blamed for them not going.[8]
