About Isaac Stephens

From "Sequatchie Families" by James L. Douhat:

Isaac Stephens, scion of the Stephens family in Sequatchie Valley, came to this area via Virginia and Meigs County, Tennessee. He was born on February 26, 1782 in Botetourt County, Virginia, the son of Soloman and Milly or Molly Britt. Soloman had come to this country with his brother James, sometime around 1785-1786 from England.

According to the family tradition, Isaac, the only son, did not like his stepfather so when about nine years old, he went to live with the family of John and Anna Davis of Montgomery County, Virginia. This family moved to Meigs County, Tennessee. Isaac married their daughter Anna, in January, 1803.

Isaac Stephens was born in the state of Virginia. Anna Davis, his wife, was born in the state of New York. They were among the first settlers of Sequatchie Valley. They first thought of locating at Big Spring farm where they died, but the cane was so heavy and thick they went down near Pikeville and cleared up some land on what is known now as the "Old Aaron Swafford" farm. Isaac Stephens was at one time a member of the legislature of Tennessee. He was a very zealous Christian, a class leader at Stony Point Church (Methodist).

He did serve in the Tennessee legislature for the 10th, 11th, and 15th session of that body. These were the years 1813, 1815, and 1823. He was a representative of Bledsoe County for two terms and Marion County for one, the 15th session. He was also commissioned as a Captain in the 31st Militia Regiment of Tennessee. He served as a commissioner in the town of Pikeville.

Isaac Stephens is mentioned several times in "County Court Minutes (Abstract) 1841-1846, Bledsoe County, Tennessee", including the following:
