Hettie married Isaac Bennett, the son of Adam Bennett, Sr. and Hannah. Isaac's father Adam, Sr. was formerly enslaved on Magnolia Plantation on the Ashley River in St. Andrews Parish, Charleston, South Carolina.

At the time that Isaac registered for the 1917-1919 draft, he listed Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina as his residence. He was working there as a boatman.
Hettie and her family migrated to New York City where Isaac was employed by the railroad. Isaac, his wife Hettie (below rendered Hattie) and daughter Evelena (below rendered Evelyn) appear on the 1930 Federal Census in Manhatten, New York. Their household was:
