Herman was a printer (lithographer) in Brookland, Ohio. He died in the bathtub in a German nursing home in Cleveland, Ohio (Altenheinm). According to Herman: Reisland should be pronounced "Rizlund". Reis means traveler in German. They were "traveling salesmen in Germany". Herman Reisland's father imigrated from Germany.

The 1880 Census listed Herman living at home with his parents, Gindher and Augusta. Gindher listed his birthplace and his parents birthplace as being Prussia. The census recorded Herman's profession in 1880 as being a printer. He was 15 years old at the time. Uncle Arnie (Reisland) remembers that he did not finish school. His father apparently taught him the trade, because Ginder's profession was listed as a "Typeseter at home".

Herman lived at 101st between Detroit and Dennison. He grandson, Ed remembered that it had a front porch all the way across the front and had a basement, 2 stories and an attic. Ed also remembered these facts: He had a black buick, and when he used to wash his car he added kerosine to the wash to make it shine more. Herman boarded at Ella's house at 1370 Webb road with Ella and Aunt Tina in approximately 1944-45. If Aunt Tina went to the market and swa him at the local bar it would really upset her. Later he moved to an apartment on Dennison St. and lived there with a "lady friend". She died and he moved to a German nursing home in Clevelend, OH on Detroit St. (Altenheinm).

It was reported that he always dressed up---a tie, shirt and suit coat. Before he died Cindy Reisland (great granddaughter) remembered him even though she was just an infant. She remembers him as having large hands and was "smelly". She learned later that he smoked cigars.

Paul Hartman's notes: Paul Hartman's grandmother was upset and resentful of Lizzie and Herman for she said that Herman had pressured Michael (his father-in-law) to give him money for his living with themn or he would have him put in a nursing home. She thought that was why there was no inheritance for the family for Herman got it all. I don't believe it for all that I have found points to him not being a very good businessman. He moved around in occupations. He had a grocery store, for a couple of years. He had "The William Tell House" which was a sailors bar and boarding house on Front St. then he went back to having a store. It just seemed like he never had much with so many children.
