Herbert Hutchings was born in 1847 at Whatley in the parish of Winsham, Somerset. He was the son of Mary Ann Hutchings, formerly Forsey, and her husband Edmund Wilkins Hutchings, a farm bailiff. Herbert appears to have been the sixth of seven children. He appears in the 1851 census living with his parents and siblings at Whatley. Some time between 1851 and 1861 the family left the Winsham area and moved to Northover near the town of Ilchester. By the time of the 1861 census Herbert had left home and was working as a labouring servant for a baker in the village of Babcary, just north of Northover.
Herbert's next sighting is in 1869, when he was married in the Wareham area of Dorset to a widow named Thirza Champ Harris, formerly Goff. Her first husband had been lost at sea five years earlier. She had a son, Harry Thomas Harris, who was about six years old. She was from the port town of Poole, and Herbert and Thirza settled there after their marriage, with Hebert working as a baker, confectioner and grocer and Thirza as a milliner. Herbert and Thirza went on to have another four children, all born in Poole. Curiously they named one of their sons Harry too, so Thirza had two sons called Harry. Perhaps Harry Thomas Harris was known by his middle name. Thirza and Herbert appear in each census together from 1871 to 1911 at addresses in the centre of Poole, seemingly running a bakery and grocery shop together. In both 1901 and 1911 they were listed at 130 High Street, which was clearly quite a large property, as they occupied ten rooms there.
Herbert died on 3rd February 1927, aged 79. Immediately before his death he was living at a house called 'Ellesmere' on Serpentine Road in Poole. Thirza survived him by eight years. She died on 15th February 1935, aged 96.
