Alfred Hutchings was baptised on 29th August 1841 at Crewkerne in Somerset, son of Mary Ann Hutchings, formerly Forsey, and her husband Edmund Hutchings, a farm bailiff. He appears to have been the fourth of seven children. Some time in the mid 1840s the family moved from Crewkerne to Whatley in the parish of Winsham, where they appear in the 1851 census. By 1861 he had left home and was lodging a couple of miles south of Whatley at Thorncombe, just over the county boundary into Dorset. He was working as a cordwainer (shoe maker) which occupation he was to pursue for the rest of his life.

By 1871 he had moved over 25 miles from Thorncombe to the county town of Dorchester, where he appears lodging in the town at 1 Greenings Court, which is a narrow courtyard accessed via an alley between 44 and 45 High East Street, one of the town's main thoroughfares. A couple of doors away, at 47 High East Street, was a domestic servant called Elizabeth Roper, who was originally from the village of Tolpuddle. Alfred and Elizabeth were married later that year, on 4th December 1871 at Tolpuddle.

Their first child was born at Charminster, just north of Dorchester, after which they returned to Dorchester, having several more children there. The 1881 census finds Alfred and Elizabeth living at 11 Grove Buildings, on the western side of Dorchester. In the late 1880s they moved to Charminster, settling in a three roomed cottage on Church Lane, where they appear in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

Alfred died in 1910, aged 69. Elizabeth appears to have outlived Alfred by about 24 years.
