About Henry Moyer

Probably the Germantown pioneer, who came in 1804, and died in October of the same year. He seems to have been in very good circumstances, having two large wagons filled with household goods and farming utensils and drawn by four horses. His son Jonathan is the only one who remained in this neighborhood.

The father of Henry Moyer, John, of Berks Co., PA, Bethel Township, died in 1794, leaving real estate valued at 1700 pounds to Henry, "his heirs and assigns forever." Henry was executor for his father and with Thomas Kerr and Jacob Arts of Berks Co.; gives bond of 480 pounds, the mother to have the interest from said bond as long as she lives. Her name is not given in these papers, but in the Shuey Genealogy, find her as the second wife of Martin Shuey, (son of Daniel Shuey, the immigrant), who died in 1801. Margaret Moyer Shuey died in 1806. Her will dated May 30, 1806, names her children, viz. "children of my deceased son Henry Moyer; to Elizabeth Moyer, child of my deceased son Philip Moyer; my eleven children, Christian, John, Jacob, Michael, Peter, Rudolph and Abraham Moyer; daughters, Anna, wife of Jacob Lesh; Elizabeth, wife of Michael Frantz; Barbara, wife of Jacob Kline; Margaret, wife of Rudolph Hunsiker."

The estate of Henry Moyer was admitted to probate Nov 6, 1804, the administrator being the widow Elizabeth, and his brother, Christian Moyer, under bond of six thousand dollars.

[From the "History of Twin Valley," a history of Germantown, written by the Rev. J.P. Hentz (1882).]

"In the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near the village of Elkton and the boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park, a small stream called Naked Creek begins in the Blue Ridge Mountains, forms the present boundary between Page and Rockingham Counties and empties into the South Fork of the Shenandoah River which flows between the Massanutten Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

At least 430 acres of land on the southeast bend of the Southern Fork of the Shenandoah on both sides of Naked Creek was the Moyer homestead of Jacob Moyer. In Verbena Mill Park, on the homestead site, stands a large granite boulder with a bronze plaque which reads:

"HISTORY OF VERBENA" Original grant from King George III to Charles Cropson 1746. 1783 grant from Beverly Randolf, Governor of Virginia to Jacob Mire. 1802 Jacob Mire to George Price. Original mill built 1803; Verbena Park and present mill built by Wm. E. & H.C. Hisey -- 1935. etc.

The monument was erected about 1940 by the owners of the land and the records, as far as can be ascertained, was based on family tradition. However, the original land grants and deed records show that 380 acres of land were granted on April 10, 1751 (by King George II) to one Charles Crosson. On May 12, 1762, Jacob Moyer purchased the land from Charles and Christena Crosson. An adjoining 50 acres was surveyed for Jacob Moyer on September 30, 1762.

In addition on July 20, 1768, Jacob Moyer and Jacob Bear were granted a patent from King George III for an additional 280 acres of land across the Shenandoah. This land was sold on August 17, 1771 for 64 by Jacob and Barbara Miller Bear and Jacob Moyer and his wife Christena to Michael and George Huffman.

Rockingham County was formed in 1778 from part of Augusta County. From legal descriptions in the original surveys and deeds, the land held by Jacob Moyer and his neighbors was professionally plotted on U.S. Dept. of the Interior topological maps of the area. These locations were correlated with lists of tithables, landowners, militia companies and census lists for 1775, 1784, 1788, 1792 and 1810 to identify the records pertaining to the family of Jacob and Christena (Ebert) Moyer.

The land purchased by Jacob Moyer in 1762 lay int he area along the South Fork of the Shenandoah which had been settled by many Germans -- Mennonites and Dunkards (German Baptist Brethren) from Switzerland and the Palatinate and German Reformed (Calvinists) and Lutherans from southern Germany. Most had come from Pennsylvania, but a few crossed the Blue Ridge from the Virginia settlements east of the mountains. Jacob Moyer and his family were Lutherans and were members of the old St. Peter's Church west of the Shenandoah. This church, founded in 1733 as the Naked Creek Church east of the Shenandoah, was moved across the river and the name changed to St. Peter's in 1747. The church cemetery still stands on this site in Rockingham County, but many of the old stones are unreadable. The present St. Peter Church is in nearby Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia.

Although many of the original records of Rockingham County were burned during the Civil War, enough early records remain the clearly document the family of Jacob and Christena Moyer and two of their sons, Jacob Jr. and Henry who moved to Montgomery County, Ohio, shortly after 1800.

In 1800, the names of Jacob and Henrick Moyer appear on a list of those making a free will offering at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. In 1810, after Jacob's death, his widow, Christena, lived in a household with one other female and one slave adjoining the household of her son Henry on the north side of Naked Creek near the household of her son Jacob Jr. on the south side of Naked Creek.

The records show at least 9 children of Jacob Sr. and Christena Moyer: Philip, Mary Margaret, Anna Maria, Jacob Jr., Michael, Henry, Christena, Barbara, and a daughter. Philip, the eldest known son, died before June 5, 1800, when his widow, Catherine, married Daniel Doval. Philip served in the militia during the Revolution and was commissioned a 1st Lt. on April 24, 1780. The only child of Philip known in Christena or Catherine, who married John Eaton in 1806 in Rockingham Countyh. Michael, born ca 1767-1772, is shown as the son of Jacob Sr. in the 1788 Rockingham militia lists. He may have been the Michael Moyer who married Sarah Price in Rockingham in 1791. He perhaps died young or left Rockingham County at an early age since he cannot be identified in other records. Barbara, born ca 1780, married February 12, 1799, Marcus Alder in Rockingham County, but no further information is available. Jacob Jr and Henry moved to German Township, Montgomery County, Ohio, and were permanently settled there at least by 1814.

Henry MOYER, born Bet. 1755 - 1760 in Bethel Township, Berks County, PA.; died 1804 in Montgomery County, Ohio. He married Anna WOLF. Notes for Henry MOYER: Following is the list of persons who bought at the estate sale of Henry Moyer on Dec. 20, 1804 in what is now Jefferson township in Montgomery county. His farm was located on the northeast corner of what is now Jamaica and Farmersville-West Carrollton Road which would pass down to his granddaughter Catherine Bowser and her husband Jacob Beckenbaugh. From The History of Montgomery County, Ohio, by Beers. (1882). "Henry and Elizabeth Moyer, natives of Pennsylvania, settled in Section 35, on the west bank of the Miami in 1804, where Henry died the following year. Their son, Peter, was but fifteen years old upon coming to this county, having been born in Berks County. Penn., September 7, 1789. Married Elizabeth Heck, of Jefferson Township, October 8, 1812, who bore him ten children. Both spent their lives in this township." This entry suggests that it is unlikely that this Henry Moyer died in Valley City, in Guernsey County.
