In 1880 he was living and farming with his older brother, James. In 1900 he was an inmate in prison , 1910, 1920 & 1930 he was a farmer; In 1910 his mother was with him and 1930 he was a widower living alone.

Grandaughter, Harriet Hosler Kenney. thinks her brother wrote the following. 'Henry was a hard working, determined individual. never relenting to distractions or fatique when there was work to be done. A truly successful farmer. He built his own stone house, garage and several out buildings to house his chickens & pigs. He had a large barn (always clean and full of feed) for the many cows and horses. He raised beautiful horses, some Arabian, that he trailered all over Michigan for stud services. He felt more affection for his horses than for most people, though his grandchildren considered him kind and gentle.

Henry was involved in a fight over his wife with a hired hand. Using his fist, Henry managed to knock an ear off the suiter, even though a pistol was pointed at his head. The man died shortly after and Henry was sent to Jackson prison for murder. There he spent 3 years before he was exonerated and given a full pardon by the Governor for self-defense.

He provided his son and wife with a home in Torch Lake as long as they stayed there.

He knew how to farm and save money but he was talked into leaving all his possessions to a con-artist from Detroit. He didn't know women.

Henry sold his farm in Eastport and lived in Central Lake 7 or 8 years until his death.'

Carol Hosler Perkins wrote: 'My brother lived with Henry off and on as a kid. We all remember how Henry kept rolls of $20 bills in the kitchen cabinets - drawers & doors. Of course he knew where & how much he had but no one ever knew why he did this. We don't recall him ever buying a stitch of clothing for himself but he bought shoes for us!'

Dewey Hosler, his nephew, said he had one child. He had alot of money and left it all to his wife.

Belle Sweet said he had lots of money, was stingy and didn't care for kids.

Jim Murphy said Henry chewed off part of the ear of Benoni Moore, and later shot him because he was fooling around with Henry's wife. He was sentenced to 10 years at Marquette, but was paroled after 3 yrs for saving the warden's life. News Article

Hosler Was Convicted Last Friday and Gets Five Years

The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against Hosler last week, after a stubbornly fought trial by his attorneys and the Judge sentenced him to the state prison at Marquette for five years. Hosler was arrested last October for the crime which landed him in states prison and has been in the county jail since that time. It will be remembered that he shot Benoni Moore, a son of Joseph Moore in Echo township, and while at the time the wound was not considered very dangerous, Moore afterward died from the effects of it. The defense claimed that death resulted from unnecessary exposure before the wound healed, and that if proper care had been observed that Moore might still be alive. Hosler was jealous of his wife and found her in Moore's company at the time of the shooting.

Summary of Probate File 4467. Glenn Hosler petitioned the court, June 18 1947, stating there was no will, that the estate's estimated value was $1200, that the heirs were Clifford, grandson; Glenn, grandson; Harriet Kenney, granddaughter; and Harvey Lee, grandson; and asking that the administration be granted to R.H. Schuyler.

On the inventory listing, dated January 28, 1949, Mrs. Halsey DeVries of Cedar Springs stated, "I hereby certify all of the above listed articles, except the tools and tool chest belong to me, and as to the tool chest and tools Mr. Hosler said they were to be mine. I make this statement and proof of claim in order that I may get possession of the goods, I do not want the money for them but do want the goods." (Note: There was a Haley DeVries, born 1872, living in Central Lake in 1940. Her husband, Lambert, died 1943.)

In 1880 he was 14 years old(1866); 1891 at his 1st marriage, 24 years old (1866), 1910 thru 1930 censuses the birth year would be 1860-62. Using the 1866 year here because the earlier census are probably more accurate, and because he had siblings born in 1859,61,63, with a 7-year gap 1862 - 69.
