Hardeman was born a twin and became the favorite child of his mother Lillian. He was always nice, had a kind word to say, and had a cheerful disposition. He served in WWII where he died in the Pacific. He was a gunner flying extra missions (because the more missions you flew the sooner you got to go home). He was close to earning his return home when his plane crashed on takeoff. Being in the bottom gunner position, he died instantly. His siblings and father were so worried about how his mother would react to the loss of her favorite son that they kept the news of his death secret for as long as they could. When Lillian finally learned of Hardeman's death she suffered some severe mental problems (which had likely been preexisting but triggered by her sons death).[2]
