Facts and Events
Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 about Hannah J. Belford 1880 Census Center Dist, Calhoun Co., West Virginia Hannah Jane 'Janie' moved from the family home in Big Springs, Calhoun County, West Virginia after her husband, Albert, died. The family all thought she should not stay on the farm by herself. She and Albert owned a house in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and two of her children lived there. So she moved to the city into that house. Must have been so hard, to lose her husband and then her family home. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Methodist Church in Big Springs from 1891 and refused to move her membership even after Albert died and she had to move to Parkersburg. She considered herself still a member and contributed there until her death in 1959. She was taken back to #7 Nobe Cemetery in Calhoun County for burial. Her family always thought, and perhaps Janie did too, that her birthday was 2 Feb 1872. But that birthdate conflicts with her brother Brady's 1872 birthdate; so the record of Ohio Births 1800-1962 of 1 Feb 1871 must be accepted. Even her tombstone has the 1872 birth date on it. From the Parkersburg (WV) News May 12, 1959: Mrs. Janie Belford Jackson, 87, 904 Lakeview Dr., died Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph’s hospital after a brief illness. She was born at Sardis, O., Feb. 2, 1872, a daughter of John and Susan Norman Belford and had lived in Parkersburg for the past 16 years, coming here from Big Springs, W. Va. Mrs. Jackson had been a member of the Chestnut Grove Methodist Church at Big Springs since 1891. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Garretson of Grantsville and Mrs. J. E. Cunningham of Parkersburg; one son, Carl D. Jackson of this city; five grandchildren, James Garretson, Grantsville; Mrs. Ira Reese, Nitro; Wayne and Beryl Cunningham, Parkersburg, and Mrs. William Kimble, Titusville, Fla. Also surviving are ten great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Jackson’s husband, Albert H. Jackson, died in 1942. Also preceding her in death were two sons, Clyde D. and Earl Jackson. Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Ogdin funeral home, Dr. William M. Craig officiating. Additional services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Number Seven Church in Nobe, W. Va., and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Ogdin funeral home after 7 p.m. today. References
