A celebration of the life of Gordon E. Bright well, 80, Carthage, was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Jim Quist, Mt. Moriah Methodist Church, officiated.

A quartet of Allen Case, Chad Case, Jessica Case and Erin Osborne sang "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" and "How Great Thou Art." Don Campbell provided accompaniment on the piano. Pallbearers were Clinton Bright well, Mike Bright well, Donovan Hensley, Erick Knell, Fred Allen Knell and Zach Ziler. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Cardwell, Leroy Cardwell, Frank Dawald, Victor Frerer, John Lewis, Bill Moody, Glenn Page, Dane Knell, Fred Knell, Lloyd Knell and Ron Wright. Burial was in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Full military honors were provided by the Missouri Honor Guard, Jefferson City, Mo., with the U.S. Army Honor Guard serving as pallbearers at the cemetery.

CARTHAGE, MO — Gordon E. Brightwell, 80, Carthage, Mo., passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a brief illness. He has lived in Carthage most of his life. Gordon was born at Protem, Mo., Taney County, on April 19, 1930, to J.W. "Jim" and Betha (Williams) Brightwell, moving to Carthage in 1935. He married Deloris L. Bowman on Dec. 28, 1950, at the Methodist parsonage in Carthage. Together they made their home in Carthage. Gordon attended Carthage schools and graduated from Carthage High School in 1948. He and Deloris were classmates at Carthage High School. He and his father, along with Deloris and his mother, Betha, operated Brightwell¹s 66 service station on South Garrison Avenue for 21 years and then spent the next 20 years at Ryder Tran-sportation services as a mechanic. Also during this work period he spent 24 years in the Missouri National Guard, 203rd Tank and Engineer Battalion of the Missouri National Guard, 1949 to 1969, and 235th GF Battalion, Kansas City, Mo., General Headquarters, 1969 to 1973, retiring in 1973 as a Major. He also worked part time for five years at Carthage Farm and Home. He was a member of Mount Moriah Methodist Church since 1972. Gordon was active with his children and grandchildren in 4H and FFA, a representative with United Commercial Travelers Insurance for 50 years, a devoted sports grandpa with his grandchildren and a bicycle riding enthusiast with his friend, Glenn Page. Survivors include two children, Karen S. (Tom) Ziler, Carthage, and Rick J. (Barbara) Brightwell, Carthage; four grandchildren, Amber (Donovan) Hensley, Nixa, Mo., Zachary Ziler, Bloomington, Ill., Clinton Brightwell and Anna Brightwell, Carthage; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Hensley, Nixa. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Jim Quist, Mount Moriah Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Mount Moriah Building Fund in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.
