Facts and Events
The name was actually recorded in the Quaker records as "Stouell" and again as Stowell (the 'u' and the 'v' were used interchangeably in those days. George was married to a woman named "Jone", who was also entered multiple times as "Joan" and "Joane". According to Carmae M. Smith's 1979 "The Stovall Family in America", George and Jone (Joan) lived in Guildford, Surreyshire England when their son Bartholomew was born in 1665. His birth is recorded (four times) in the Quaker records of Guildford, and can be found in the Library of the Religious Society of Friends, Friend's House, Euston Road, London, England, N.W.L. The manuscript can be found in the library under "Digests of Births for the Quarterly Meeting of Sussex and Surrey. George, as further described in Smith's book about the Stovall's, was evidently a 'dissenter', as he was a 'Friend' and/or Quaker. He was cited seven times in 1661 and 1662 for not attending church (Church of England). Smith believes that George and Joan were the only members of the England Stovalls who became 'Friends'. Records show that he paid a 'Hearth Tax' in 1664. Albury, Surreyshire, England records also show that he was buried on 8 November 1666. George and Joan were possibly Quakers. According to records from the Church of England they did not attend church for over 3 months (Easter 1661 term of Surrey Quarters Sessions - criminal court of the county). The sheriff's response to the 5 separate writs on April 1661 indicates that he could not find George. George was cited on Easter Term 1662 and also on April 28 1663 for not attending. Throughout all this, there's no record he was punished for the offenses. At that time, the Church of England was the only recognized church in England and attendance was mandatory. References
