• George Rankin who received a land patent August 20, 1747, on the north side of Middle River and north of Beverly Manor but south of the present boundary between Augusta and Rockingham Counties. (Note: this patent has not been located in Chalkley's)

George Rankin, the ancestor, was in Augusta County, Virginia as early as August 20th, 1755, when James King is mentioned as the "servant of George Rankin".

George "of Middle River" d. 26 JAN 1760. His wife Martha is possibly a CRAWFORD, sister of George, Patrick, James and Alexander (all children of William Crawford (1691-1761) and Mary Douglas. She married 2ndly Robert Stephenson who died 1772.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Background: The land surrounding Carpenter's Ford Bridge across the Middle River was contained withinpatents granted to David Logan in 1740, and George Rankin in 1747. David Logan sold his192-acre tract on the southeast side of Middle River to Robert Craig on February 16, 1748.Craig was probably the first to establish a farm on the tract, which, after the AmericanRevolution, was named "Bunker HiU Plantation" by the local people. Robert's son Johnconveyed the farm to James Johnston on April 19, 1793. After this transfer, the farm remainedin the Johnston family until 1882, and was managed by the executors of Zecheriah Johnston until 1905

Since my direct line went to SC, I haven't followed up with the bunch who moved to WV, but here's what I have on the Augusta Co. VA bunch.

GEORGE Rankin b. circa 1720 married Martha (we think CRAWFORD, sister of Patrick, George, James d.c1751 and Alexander) probably in Augusta Co. VA circa 1742. George "of Middle River" d. 26 JAN 1760. Martha married 2nd Robert Stephenson 29 APR 1768; he died 12 AUG 1772 naming his step-dau Mary Rankin. [I have Augusta Co. court records to back up everything in the above but her surname as CRAWFORD/sibling of those CRAWFORDS.]

George and Martha had:

• 1. JEAN baptized 15 OCT 1743 by Rev. John Craig. She m. James BELL who

might be the one who died 1800 in Augusta Co.

• 2. THOMAS baptized 22 SEP 1745 [DAR as his birth as 22 MAY 1745]

d. 18 SEP 1787. He served as Capt. of militia during RW. He m. Mary CRAWFORD, dau of George and Elizabeth POAGE, circa 1778

• 3. WILLIAM baptized 13/20 MAR 1747/8 d. 17 DEC 1817 Anderson Co. SC

m. Lettice ROBERTSON, dau of William and Lettice (?Kerr) They went to KY circa 1788, appear on 1790 census in Augusta Co. VA and are in SC by 1793.

• 4. JOHN b. c1750 d. 4 JAN 1790 unmarried.
• 5. JAMES b. c1752 d. 1822 in Augusta Co. m. Jane "Jinny" RUSSELL

17 SEP 1807 [One descendant still lived on their property in 1990s.]

• 6. ROBERT b. c1754 d. 28 AUG 1815 m. Elizabeth RUSSELL 12 SEP 1805.

They went to Pocahontas Co. now W VA.

• 7. MARY b. c1758 d. 1788 Fayette Co. KY m. John Young 5 SEP 1785

Capt. THOMAS and Mary CRAWFORD had the following children: 1. Elizabeth "Betsy" b. c1778 d. 1819 m. Mathew Blair 23 SEP 1797 2. Martha "Patsy" b. c1780 d. 1815 m. John A. POAGE 27 NOV 1798 3. Margaret "Peggy" b. c1781 d. 6 DEC 1814 Pocahontas Co. W VA m. George W. POAGE 8 APR 1800. George was "of Bath Co." at time. 4. JAMES b. c1781-3 d. 15 MAR 1855 m. Nancy McNeal 25 JUL 1831. By 1822 he was on the Greenbrier River in now Pocahontas Co. VW 5. GEORGE b. 4 FEB 1782 d. 22 AUG 1854 Anderson Co. SC m. 24 SEP 1806 Mary "Polly" RANKIN, dau of James Rankin dec'd. [He is found in SC with "Uncle William" as early as 1793, but they married in Augusta Co. VA. She is thought to be the daughter of Lettice Robertson -- "later" wife of his "Uncle William Rankin".] 6. JOHN b. c1784 killed by kick from horse after 1790 census.

I am looking for origin of George Rankin who received a land patent August 20, 1747, on the north side of Middle River and north of Beverly Manor but south of the present boundary between Augusta and Rockingham Counties. Who are his parents, where was he born, when was he born, when did he arrive in this country, where did he come from, when and whom did he marry, does he have brothers and sisters? He came to Augusta with the Crawfords. His wife is thought to be a Crawford. He died 1760. He a member of the Old Augusta Stone Church. Children mentioned in will are Jean, Thomas, William, John, James, Robert, and Mary. Wife is Martha. Witnesses to will are James and Robert Craig and Theobald Mangham. Executors were Samuel Henderson and Thomas Patterson. Any help would be appreciated.

Robert, I believe George came to America with his Mother.They met up I believe with relatives who preceded them to America by way of the Nottingham colony first in PA. they traveled South to VA,then to Guillford Co., N.C. His son Robert fought in the Revolutionary War. They came from Ireland,But from scot.Decent. you can find some info in"History of Buffalo Presbyterian Church an her People" Greensboro,N.C. By: Rev.
