After the deaths of George and Nancy Keffer in 1876 and 1878, the children went to live with various relatives.
In the 1881 census:
- Ephraim (born 1864) is found with Jacob and Margaret Burkholder.
- Franklin Keffer (born 1865) was not found.
- Maryann Keffer (born 1867) is found with Valentine and Mary Keffer.
- Nathaniel Keffer (born 1869) is found with John Lehmer and family.
- Margaret Ann Keffer (born 1871) was not found.
- Christena Keffer (born 1873) is found with Jacob and Barbara Lahmer (father's sister).
- John George Keffer (born 1875) is found with Jacob and Barbara Lahmer (father's sister).
Franklin and Margaret Ann have not been found in the 1881 census, but they are both in the 1891 censuses, living in households within the extended family. Their absence in the 1881 census is probably due to enumerator errors (such as giving them the household surname), although Franklin would have been old enough to be farming elsewhere--even with some of his American family).
