About George Breeding

George Breeding appears to have been a younger brother of John Breeding, who records show came from Prince William County, Virginia to an area of the Shenandoah Valley near the Hawksbill River that bordered [then] Augusta and Frederick Counties. Both George and John appear to be probable sons of Bryant Breeding of Prince William County. George served as a "chain carrier" for an early survey for his brother John in 1751, and as such, George would have been at least close to being "of age", placing his birth likely no later than 1732 or so, taking into account his [likely] older brother John's birthdate in 1730.

George lived in the area known as the District of West Augusta, which was a short-lived historical region of Colonial Virginia which was split into Ohio, Yohogania and Monongalia Counties in 1778. George was living in Monongalia County and was listed in an early Virginia census there in 1782. He later migrated to Kentucky and was listed in the 1810 Census in Adair County, where he died just two years later, in 1812.

Records in Virginia

  • Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys - Edward Humston/Hampston of Prince William Co., 5 Apr. 1751 - 8 May 1751; 410 acres on branches of Pass Run; adj. John Breeding, John Wood, John Bumgardner. Chain Carriers: Wm. Hughes & Geo. Breeding. Surv. George Hume. [Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys, Orange & Augusta Counties, with Tithables, Delinquents, Petitioners, 1730-1754, Volume One, Peggy Smomo Joyner, pg. 26]. [Note: as George Breeding served as a chain carrier for this survey of his brother's land survey in 1751, George was likely close to being of legal age, hence his estimated birthdate of 1732].
