    To clarify: Sister Mary Charlotte Gambol was Frank's biological niece. Frank adopted her when his sister-in-law and brother died.

    1940 census: I search all over and did not find him and his wife and eldest child. Rumor has it that they lived over a brothel, but would not admit that, and so were not enumerated! slw

    In the 1930 census we can find that Frank (and his sister and brothers and mother) had as neighbors the Schimandle family - Joe, Francis, Francis (Jr), Ruth, Edwin, Emil, and Albert. Grandpa was good friends with the Schimandles for his entire life, especially Ed and his wife Sophie who later owned a Welch's grape farm in Harpersfield, Ohio. He would visit the Schimandles on his way from Mentor to Rome to visit us. - slw

    Grandpa Gambol liked to sing cowboy songs and talk about the old west, but he himself didn't ride a horse or rope or anything like that. slw

    26 December 1999
    Aunt Donna reports that the reason that Grandpa had the name Francis Clarence, which to me sounds sissy-ish, was that his mother thought that Francis was an American-sounding name - not Slovak-sounding. The name "Clarence" was chosen as his confirmation middle name and is not on his birth certificate. Aunt Donna says the rumor is that Grandpa's brothers dared him to take the name "Clarence", even upping the stakes by promising him $5 each if he would do it. Frank did and they paid him a total of $10. slw
