He was 82 years old and had lived in this community for the past 67 years, active in business, church and civic circles. He entered the ice and coal business at the time many of the large sawmills of this section were moving away, and has been active in the business up until 13 years ago. His health had been failing for the past year and a half although he was not seriously ill until September. He saw the fine old church burn to the ground three times and was chairman of the building committee that erected the present one. He was born in Zyldyk, Groningen, Netherlands, Mar. 14, 1849, crossing the Atlantic ocean all alone on a sailing vessel when a lad of 14 years. He was six weeks on the trip and came directly here, where a brother, the late Cornelius Van Zanten, well known commercial fisherman, had already settled. The sawmills offered the employment of that day and he advanced to head sawyer on some of the big mills before the industry died out. It was then he started in his own business. He was married on Oct. 7, 1870 to Miss Alice Barr and nine children were born to them. Mrs. Van Zanten passed away 29 years ago, when a smallpox epidemic was raging in Michigan. She had returned from Detroit were their oldest son, Charles VanZanten had died from the dread disease and within a few weeks she was taken in the same way. Mr. Van Zanten was married again in 1918 to Mrs. Gertrude Stevens of this city and they continued to live in the home established on Elliott st. in the early days when there was only forest and swamp in that section.
