Eugene J. Scanlon 1884 - 1949

Rounsevell Mortuary records of Lead state that Eugene James Scanlon was born in Harleigh, Pennsylvania on June 14, 1884; died at the Homestake Hospital in Lead on February 10, 1949 at the age of 64 years 7 months and 26 days; funeral at the Catholic Church on February 14, 1949; residence - 14 Summit Street in Lead; husband of Lila Scanlon; occupation - shift boss; father - David Scanlon; mother - Anna Moye.

Lead Daily Call newspaper, February 10, 1949 - "Homestake Veteran And Shift Boss Dies. Eugene J. Scanlon, Homestake shift boss and member of the Homestake Veterans Association and the Widows Benefit Circle, died shortly after 12 o'clock today noon in the Homestake hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. He had been absent from work several weeks since the holidays with a heart ailment but had worked quite recently. Born in Hazelton, Pa., June 14, 1884, he entered the employ of the Homestake Mining company in January 1918, and worked his way up to the position of shift boss. He was a widower, his wife having died March 18, 1935. She is buried in the Municipal cemetery in South Lead. Mr. Scanlon, who lived at 14 West Summit Street, was admitted into the Homestake Veterans Association February 18, 1938. He was a member of the Catholic church. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Kate Conboy of Denver and Mrs. Anna Johnston living near Denver and a number of nieces and nephews in Denver. His only relative in Lead is a cousin, Frank Moye. Funeral arrangements will be from the Rounsevell Funeral Home."

Lead Daily Call, February 13, 1949 - "Scanlon Funeral Set For Monday. Funeral services for Eugene Scanlon of Lead, who died Thursday noon at the Homestake hospital, of a heart ailment, will be held Monday at 9:30 o'clock from St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lead. Interment will be in the Municipal cemetery in South Lead. Rosary services will be recited at 7:30 Sunday evening at the Rounsevell Funeral Home."

Lead Daily Call, February 14, 1949 - Homestake Veteran Is Buried Today. Eugene Scanlon, well known early day resident of Lead and Homestake Veteran, was buried today with a high mass of requiem at 9;30 from St. Patrick's Catholic church. Father John Cummisky, from the Abbey of Mt. Angel, Ore., was celebrant and also preached the sermon. Flowers and spiritual bouquets were in evidence. Mrs. Joseph Dunn was in charge of the music and played the organ. Mrs. Ray Carroll was the soloist, singing Rosewig's 'Ave Maria' and "Sacred Heart Hymn.' Casket bearers to the municipal cemetery in South Lead were Hugo Bendt, E. Leveque, Jack Marasovich, Victor Mellini, Harry Harrison and James J. Green. An honorary escort included Ed Ross Sr., James Penrose, John Marx, Edward Pringle, George Lorang, Walter Moorhead, Ralph Sherman, A.E. Odell, Horace Palmer, John Jeffrey, Glen Peed, William DeBow, A.G. Pendo, and M.J. Vallandingham. The death of Mr. Scanlon, a shift boss for the Homestake Mining company occurred at the Homestake hospital Thursday noon following a short period of failing health. His two sisters, Mrs. Kate Conboy and Mrs. Anna Johnston and her husband of Denver, were in attendance at the services, having arrived here Friday."

Homestake Mining Company Veterans' Association records note that Eugene J. Scanlon joined the association on February 18, 1939; born at Hazelton, Pennsylvania on June 14, 1884; widower; no children; began work for Homestake in January of 1918 at the Star Hoist; died at the Homestake Hospital in Lead on February 9, 1949 of a heart attack.
