Lead Daily Call newspaper, August 19, 1913 - "DANIEL SCANLON. Last night at 9 o'clock at St. Joseph's hospital, death came to claim Daniel Scanlon, after an illness of short duration, the result of a sunstroke received on his farm in the valley. The deceased was 82 years of age at the time of his death, was born in Ireland and came to America almost fifty years ago and for the last thirty years has been a resident of the Black Hills. He was employed with the Homestake company and about five months ago went out to the farm and remained there until he was the victim of the sunstroke that caused his death. He was taken to the hospital in Deadwood and received the best medical aid obtainable, but old age, together with the sunstroke, left his chances for recovery very small. Besides a brother in Ireland and two sisters in Pennsylvania, the deceased leaves a widow to mourn his loss, and six children, Mrs. Pat Checonboy, Mrs. Rose Halleran, Mrs. Will Johnson, Daniel Scanlon Jr., Hugh Scanlon and Eugene Scanlon. The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock, unless different arrangements are made, and interment will be made in South Lead cemetery."
