Ernest John apparently wanted to marry Alice in 1910-11 but his father forbad it for family reasons. So Ernest bought his passage steerage for ten pound on the same ship ashis Uncle Edward Rutty Brinsdon was returning to New Zealand after a visit home.Edward traveled second class, so they only met a couple of times on the 6-7 week voyage. Ernest went to work for Edward on his dairy farm Duncrieff; he had tomilk cows then deliver the milk round Dunedin 7 days a week.
During 1915 Ernest went on holiday to Queenstown and went on the TSS Earnslaw to Walter Peak. Healso went to Mount Cook. Then in about 1915-16 he began writing letters to Alice again as her FiancÃ♭ had been killed in France. He joined to New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1916. In 1917 he got his first leave and went back to Wiltshire to see his parents and of course Alice. They married in January 1919.
He got his discharge in London and they were married in Gloucester.
