His parents were Elkanah Cushman, born September 15, 1678 in Plymouth, and Hesther Barnes, February 18, 1681/82, also in Plymouth.

In the Probate records of Plymouth, he is called "Elkanah Cushman, Mariner." His wife Lydia was named Administratrix; she was appointed November 10, 1742. She and Lazarus LeBarron were appointed co guardians of her son Elkanah. The inventory of her deceased husband was valued at L305 1s. 11d.
