In a family document dated 5/21/1917 on the Edmiston family history written by my Edmiston ancestor, I have the following:

Gen W.C. Edmiston married Elizabeth Stewart, Feb 11, 1810, at Britol, Tennessee, a daughter of James Stewart, an old school teacher from Scotland. She was born and reared on the site where Emory and Henry College now stands. Her mother was a Miss Rosanna Beatty. About the year 1820 they moved to Lincoln Co. Tenn, and settled one mile north of Howell. He donated the land from his farm for the Unity Pres. Church and Cemetery.

One of their nine children was John Stewart Edmiston, born 28 Feb 1815 Washington County, Virginia.
