From the Bartlett Society The will of Elisha Holmes of Plymouth dated 21 Mar 1745, proved 3 Dec 1753, names wife Susanna [and eight children now living]; unnamed children of his deceased son Elnathan; sons Elisha, Joseph, Jabez and John; daughters Mercy wife of Edward Stevens, Elizabeth wife of Elkanah Morton, Sarah wife of John Blackmer and Rebecca wife of Andrew Croswell. His friend, Nathaniel Bartlett, was executor. From Mayflower Descendant [from depositions regarding a lawsuit between John Doty and Nathaniel Morton, May 1697] "The Testimony of Elisha Holmes aged 26 years or there abouts... That about three years agoe I holpe Nathanael Morton mark a Black Horse Coalt and said Coalt had no artificial mark on him before said Morton marked him." Sworn 13 June, 1697, before William Bradford, Justice of the Peace. Elisha was probably unable to write, as he signed as witness to the will of Joseph Silvester with a mark. Plmouth Colony Deed [PR #2096] Indenture between John Barnes, yeoman & wf Mary on ye one part... and Elisha Holmes, Sr., yeoman, Elisha Holmes, Jr., Joseph Holmes, Jabez Holmes, Mercy Silvester, Elkanah Morton & wf Elizabeth, Elnathan Holmes, John Holmes & wf Sarah, all of Plymouth on the other part... whereas several pieces & parcels of land & meadow lying & being at Monument Ponds or thereabouts in Plymouth, viz: some land at ye Mill Pond & Warren's lot so called & some land or meadow at the Whale Hole & between Tarrow's field & Silvester's land at Shifting Cove Point & t ye Burch Swamp, belong to ye sd John Barnes... & to ye sd Elisha Holmes, Sr. during his life inye right of Sarah his late wife... (Chicago, 1905), pp. 833-835 (III) Elisha Holmes was reared in Plymouth, and upon reaching manhood made his home in that place. There he married a Miss Sarah Bartlett, and they had several sons.
