(II) Nathaniel Holmes, son of John, married and had several sons, among them Elisha. The family were residents of Plymouth.

Volume I At A town Meeting held at plymouth february 12th 169 2/3 The Inhabitants of sd Towne voated that the Selectmen of sd towne should Indeavour to get A scoolmaster to teach Children to Reade and write & the Inhabitants will take Care to defray the Charge therof att this towne meeting Isaac Cushman William Shurtlif Nathaniel Southworth and Baruck Jordan were Chosen to serve on the Grand Jury att the Superior Conrt att plimouth in this Instant february & John dotey John Sturtevant Joseph Bartlett James Warren John Mordow John Churchill Ephraim Coole and John Morton these to serve at sd Cort on the petty Jury and Samuell Lucas Ephraim Morton Jonathan barnes Nathaniel holmes and John foster to serve at the Country Cort at March nex after this date.

[133.] At A Town meeting held at plimouth on ye 12th of 14 acres of March 1712 ffor and in Consideration of nine land belonging pounds sixten shilings Well and Truly paid by to Nath holmes Nathaniel holmes senior Nathaniel holmes Ju: and his sons and John holmes his sons unto The Town Treasurer for ye use of the Town sd Town have Granted bargained and sold unto the above named holmes their heirs and assignes ffor Ever forten acres of land laid out in one peece Whereof four acres to belong unto ye above Nathaniel holmes senior and five acres thereof to his son Nathaniel and the other five acres to his son John holmes March 24 1712 laid out by us ye subscribers unto Nathaniel holmes and his sons Above named 14 acres of land Joining to sd Nathaniel holmes other land at pontosses meadow1 and is bounded as ffolloweth (viz) by a Red oake sapling standing in ye sd holmes hedg and from thence West Southwest 29 pole to a stake with stones about it by ye path and thence by ye sd path South East and by East to A Red oake bush by ye path being 76 pole from ye stake before mentioned and thence by ye path neere North East and by East 28 pole to a Red oake bush and thence by ye path as it Turns Northerly to a white oake tree standing in sd holmes Rainge of his other land and then by ye sd Raing as it Turns to the Red oake sapling first mentioned Alowing wayes through sd land where they may be wanted

On 19 July 1711 Nathaniel Holmes made his last will

"that I may sett my house in order," and it was proved on 21 September 1727, though witnesses had testified to it on 3 August 1727. He appointed his "dear and loving wife Marcy Holmes to be the sole executrix." After his debts and funeral charges would be paid, he disposed of his estate as follows:

Item I doe give unto my son Elisha Holmes and unto his heirs forever my ten acres of land on which he now liveth to belong unto him and his heirs and assignes forever. Item I doe give unto my son Nathaniel Holmes the one half of my sixty acre lot to belong to him and his heirs and assignes forever. Item I doe give unto my son John Holmes and to his heirs forever my twenty acre lot of land lately laid out as also the one half of my sixty acre lot as also four acres of land at Pontuses meadow so called also one of meadow at Southern marsh so called lately granted to me by the inhabitants of the town of Plimouth as also my share or part in the wharf at Wellingsly being one quarter part thereof together with my land sd Wellingsly and my warehouse on which it standeth all which severall parcels of land together with one half of my share or lot of Cedar Swamp I doe give unto him my sd son John Holmes to belong to him and his heirs and assignes forever. Item I doe give unto my son Eleazer Holmes and unto his heirs forever the one half of my homestead and the eastermost end of my dwelling house together with the one half of my fruit trees for him to have possess and enjoy immediately after my decease and after my wifes decease my will is and I doe by this instrument give unto him my son Eleazer Holmes and unto his heirs and assignes forever. Lastly I doe give unto my dear and loving wife Marcy Holmes the one half of my homestead and the westermost room of my dwelling house together with all my moveable estate to be at her dispose to be for her use and comfort during life or widowhood but if she shall se cause to marrey again then my will is that she shall have my loft bed with sutable furniture thereunto and fourty pounds out of my moveable estate to belong to her as her proper estate to dispose of as she shall se as good. And my will is that all the rest of my moveable estate that shall remain after my wives marriage or decease that shall then be found shall be equally divided between my two daughters that is to say Mercy Cobb and Sarah Ellis to each of them alike proportion thereof.

Witnesses were Manasseh Morton, John Faunce, Jr. and Thomas Faunce.
