Eli Thomas is on the 1850 and 1860 Federal Census living with his parents in Knox County, Kentucky. He moved with his parents to Indiana. He joined the army May 26, 1864 as a private in the Union Aemy for Indiana. Eli is mistakenly identified as the son of Amos and Sarah murdered by pro Confederate neighbor in Knox County, Kentucky preceding his family's move to Indiana. Geneva Dugger Taylor a great granddaughter of Amos says the rumor is Eli was murdered in Indiana. However, Geneva looked in all the newspaper clippings from August to November of 1870 in that area of Indiana for news of Eli's murder and was never able to find anything on it.
