Founder of the Carnation Company, packers of evaporated milk. He was raised in a farm surrounding, moved to El Paso at age 23 to run a general store, then came to Los Angeles engaged in a wholesale grocer operation. He purchased a mild condensery in Kent, Washington in 1899 and opened the future Carnation Co. Developer of production of evaporated milk. The evaporated milk product maintained a long shelf-life and sold under the slogan "Milk from Contented Cows." In 1926, Carnation branched into the fresh milk and ice cream product field. He was head of the company between 1899-1944. The firm is now owned by Nestlé.
