Overview

We have only three records for Edward Patterson of Old Augusta. He appears first in the 1742 militia list; then in about 1753 in a road order record in the Roanoke River area, along with Erwin Patterson; and finally, in 1755 court case, where he was the plaintiff, and the defendant, Andrew Gahagan, is noted as having left the area. Presumably these records all refer to the same person.

Given the fact that he appears as an adult in the 1742 militia list, we can infer that Edward was probably born before c1720, though he might have been under the age of 21 and still considered eligable for militia duty. Largely unsourced data for a search on Ancestry Family Trees gave a concensus DOB as 1710 (15 trees) or 1715 (15 trees). These same trees identified no wife, while a few trees (2) gave his DOD as 1761 or before. [3]

  1. Based on the fact that he was listed in the 1742 militia roster for Augusta County. That implies he was an adult in 1742, and so probably born before 1721. Ancestry trees give a concensus DOB of either 1710 or 1715, but no original source documentation has been identified to confirm either of those dates.

A 20 Jun 2013 search yielded far fewer kits for this couple (9), but all gave a 1761 DOB.
  2. The last record available for him is a 1755 court case in Augusta County. That implies that either a) he removed from the area, after that date, b), that he died soon thereafter, or c) that he simply left no other records in the area. Ancestry family trees give a DOB of 1761, but no source
  3. May 2013, using an exact search key for for "Edward Patterson", with "John Patterson" as father, "Janet Irwin" as mother, yielded 30 public member trees. Most of these trees identified no sources, or one source at best. The use of multiple sources in Ancestry trees usually indicates that at least a few individuals have made a concerted effort to based their trees on original source documentation. "One-source tree's", on the other hand, usually means that the "source" is another "unsourced tree". Since no multiple source trees were found in the search, little effort was made to identify any specific sources that might have been used. An examination of the two trees that gave a 1761 DOD yielded no substantive sourcing data.
